Those who set the Ranks · Surah 37 · Meccan · 182 verses

1وَٱلصَّـٰٓفَّـٰتِ صَفࣰّا ۝١By those who set the ranks in battle order.InsightElmalılı explains “as-saffat”, following Abu as-Su‘ud, as both those who stand in rows and those who form rows; the angels are meant.2فَٱلزَّـٰجِرَٰتِ زَجۡرࣰا ۝٢And those who drive away (the wicked) with reproof.InsightElmalılı explains “zajr” as originally repelling something by shouting and scolding, driving it on, and restraining.3فَٱلتَّـٰلِيَٰتِ ذِكۡرًا ۝٣And those who read (the Word) for a reminder.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, these are the angels who bring down revelation, scripture and the Qur’an from the Truth, and impart knowledge and gnosis.4إِنَّ إِلَٰهَكُمۡ لَوَٰحِدࣱ ۝٤Lo! thy Lord is surely One.5رَّبُّ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَمَا بَيۡنَهُمَا وَرَبُّ ٱلۡمَشَٰرِقِ ۝٥Lord of the heavens and of the earth and all that is between them, and Lord of the sun’s risings.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, “mashariq” are the rising points of the stars, or the sun rising each day at a different point through the year.6إِنَّا زَيَّنَّا ٱلسَّمَآءَ ٱلدُّنۡيَا بِزِينَةٍ ٱلۡكَوَاكِبِ ۝٦Lo! We have adorned the lowest heaven with an ornament, the planets.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, “as-sama’ ad-dunya” means the nearest heaven; “dunya” is the feminine of “adna”, nearest.7وَحِفۡظࣰا مِّن كُلِّ شَيۡطَٰنࣲ مَّارِدࣲ ۝٧With security from every froward devil.8لَّا يَسَّمَّعُونَ إِلَى ٱلۡمَلَإِ ٱلۡأَعۡلَىٰ وَيُقۡذَفُونَ مِن كُلِّ جَانِبࣲ ۝٨They cannot listen to the Highest Chiefs for they are pelted from every side.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, the devils see the physical adornments and outward lights from afar, but cannot listen to the higher assemblies, the angels.9دُحُورࣰاۖ وَلَهُمۡ عَذَابࣱ وَاصِبٌ ۝٩Outcast, and theirs is a perpetual torment.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, even at the boundary of the nearest heaven there are such repelling, expelling forces.10إِلَّا مَنۡ خَطِفَ ٱلۡخَطۡفَةَ فَأَتۡبَعَهُۥ شِهَابࣱ ثَاقِبࣱ ۝١٠Save him who snatcheth a fragment, and there pursueth him a piercing flame.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, one might steal and flee with some of the exalted assembly’s news by eavesdropping; a piercing star pursues him.11فَٱسۡتَفۡتِهِمۡ أَهُمۡ أَشَدُّ خَلۡقًا أَم مَّنۡ خَلَقۡنَآۚ إِنَّا خَلَقۡنَٰهُم مِّن طِينࣲ لَّازِبِۭ ۝١١Then ask them (O Muhammad): Are they stronger as a creation, or those (others) whom we have created? Lo! We created them of plastic clay.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, after showing these and explaining the oneness of their Creator, the deniers are asked: are they stronger, or the heavens?12بَلۡ عَجِبۡتَ وَيَسۡخَرُونَ ۝١٢Nay, but thou dost marvel when they mock.13وَإِذَا ذُكِّرُواْ لَا يَذۡكُرُونَ ۝١٣And heed not when they are reminded.14وَإِذَا رَأَوۡاْ ءَايَةࣰ يَسۡتَسۡخِرُونَ ۝١٤And seek to scoff when they behold a portent.15وَقَالُوٓاْ إِنۡ هَٰذَآ إِلَّا سِحۡرࣱ مُّبِينٌ ۝١٥And they say: Lo! this is mere magic.16أَءِذَا مِتۡنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابࣰا وَعِظَٰمًا أَءِنَّا لَمَبۡعُوثُونَ ۝١٦When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then, forsooth, be raised (again).17أَوَءَابَآؤُنَا ٱلۡأَوَّلُونَ ۝١٧And our forefathers.18قُلۡ نَعَمۡ وَأَنتُمۡ دَٰخِرُونَ ۝١٨Say (O Muhammad): Ye, in truth; and ye will be brought low.19فَإِنَّمَا هِيَ زَجۡرَةࣱ وَٰحِدَةࣱ فَإِذَا هُمۡ يَنظُرُونَ ۝١٩There is but one Shout, and lo! they behold.20وَقَالُواْ يَٰوَيۡلَنَا هَٰذَا يَوۡمُ ٱلدِّينِ ۝٢٠And say: Ah, woe for us! This is the Day of Judgment.21هَٰذَا يَوۡمُ ٱلۡفَصۡلِ ٱلَّذِي كُنتُم بِهِۦ تُكَذِّبُونَ ۝٢١This is the Day of Separation, which ye used to deny.22۞ٱحۡشُرُواْ ٱلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُواْ وَأَزۡوَٰجَهُمۡ وَمَا كَانُواْ يَعۡبُدُونَ ۝٢٢(And it is said unto the angels): Assemble those who did wrong, together with their wives and what they used to worship.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, “their kinds” means their likes: idol-worshippers with idol-worshippers, star-worshippers with star-worshippers, or with their devil companions.23مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ فَٱهۡدُوهُمۡ إِلَىٰ صِرَٰطِ ٱلۡجَحِيمِ ۝٢٣Instead of Allah, and lead them to the path to hell.24وَقِفُوهُمۡۖ إِنَّهُم مَّسۡـُٔولُونَ ۝٢٤And stop them, for they must be questioned.25مَا لَكُمۡ لَا تَنَاصَرُونَ ۝٢٥What aileth you that ye help not one another.26بَلۡ هُمُ ٱلۡيَوۡمَ مُسۡتَسۡلِمُونَ ۝٢٦Nay, but this day they make full submission.27وَأَقۡبَلَ بَعۡضُهُمۡ عَلَىٰ بَعۡضࣲ يَتَسَآءَلُونَ ۝٢٧And some of them draw near unto others, mutually questioning.28قَالُوٓاْ إِنَّكُمۡ كُنتُمۡ تَأۡتُونَنَا عَنِ ٱلۡيَمِينِ ۝٢٨They say: Lo! ye used to come unto us, imposing, (swearing that ye spoke the truth).29قَالُواْ بَل لَّمۡ تَكُونُواْ مُؤۡمِنِينَ ۝٢٩They answer: Nay, but ye (yourselves) were not believers.30وَمَا كَانَ لَنَا عَلَيۡكُم مِّن سُلۡطَٰنِۭۖ بَلۡ كُنتُمۡ قَوۡمࣰا طَٰغِينَ ۝٣٠We had no power over you, but ye were wayward folk.31فَحَقَّ عَلَيۡنَا قَوۡلُ رَبِّنَآۖ إِنَّا لَذَآئِقُونَ ۝٣١Now the Word of our Lord hath been fulfilled concerning us. Lo! we are about to taste (the doom).32فَأَغۡوَيۡنَٰكُمۡ إِنَّا كُنَّا غَٰوِينَ ۝٣٢Thus we misled you. Lo! we were (ourselves) astray.33فَإِنَّهُمۡ يَوۡمَئِذࣲ فِي ٱلۡعَذَابِ مُشۡتَرِكُونَ ۝٣٣Then lo! this day they (both) are sharers in the doom.34إِنَّا كَذَٰلِكَ نَفۡعَلُ بِٱلۡمُجۡرِمِينَ ۝٣٤Lo! thus deal We with the guilty.35إِنَّهُمۡ كَانُوٓاْ إِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمۡ لَآ إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا ٱللَّهُ يَسۡتَكۡبِرُونَ ۝٣٥For when it was said unto them, There is no Allah save Allah, they were scornful.36وَيَقُولُونَ أَئِنَّا لَتَارِكُوٓاْ ءَالِهَتِنَا لِشَاعِرࣲ مَّجۡنُونِۭ ۝٣٦And said: Shall we forsake our gods for a mad poet.37بَلۡ جَآءَ بِٱلۡحَقِّ وَصَدَّقَ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِينَ ۝٣٧Nay, but he brought the Truth, and he confirmed those sent (before him).38إِنَّكُمۡ لَذَآئِقُواْ ٱلۡعَذَابِ ٱلۡأَلِيمِ ۝٣٨Lo! (now) verily ye taste the painful doom.39وَمَا تُجۡزَوۡنَ إِلَّا مَا كُنتُمۡ تَعۡمَلُونَ ۝٣٩Ye are requited naught save what ye did.40إِلَّا عِبَادَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡمُخۡلَصِينَ ۝٤٠Save single-minded slaves of Allah.41أُوْلَـٰٓئِكَ لَهُمۡ رِزۡقࣱ مَّعۡلُومࣱ ۝٤١For them there is a known provision.42فَوَٰكِهُ وَهُم مُّكۡرَمُونَ ۝٤٢Fruits. And they will be honoured.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, there are two subtle points: the people of Paradise eat and drink purely for delight, since fruit is eaten only for pleasure; and they are honoured.43فِي جَنَّـٰتِ ٱلنَّعِيمِ ۝٤٣In the Gardens of delight.44عَلَىٰ سُرُرࣲ مُّتَقَٰبِلِينَ ۝٤٤On couches facing one another.45يُطَافُ عَلَيۡهِم بِكَأۡسࣲ مِّن مَّعِينِۭ ۝٤٥A cup from a gushing spring is brought round for them.46بَيۡضَآءَ لَذَّةࣲ لِّلشَّـٰرِبِينَ ۝٤٦White, delicious to the drinkers.47لَا فِيهَا غَوۡلࣱ وَلَا هُمۡ عَنۡهَا يُنزَفُونَ ۝٤٧Wherein there is no headache nor are they made mad thereby.48وَعِندَهُمۡ قَٰصِرَٰتُ ٱلطَّرۡفِ عِينࣱ ۝٤٨And with them are those of modest gaze, with lovely eyes.49كَأَنَّهُنَّ بَيۡضࣱ مَّكۡنُونࣱ ۝٤٩(Pure) as they were hidden eggs (of the ostrich).50فَأَقۡبَلَ بَعۡضُهُمۡ عَلَىٰ بَعۡضࣲ يَتَسَآءَلُونَ ۝٥٠And some of them draw near unto others, mutually questioning.51قَالَ قَآئِلࣱ مِّنۡهُمۡ إِنِّي كَانَ لِي قَرِينࣱ ۝٥١A speaker of them saith: Lo! I had a comrade.52يَقُولُ أَءِنَّكَ لَمِنَ ٱلۡمُصَدِّقِينَ ۝٥٢Who used to say: Art thou in truth of those who put faith (in his words).53أَءِذَا مِتۡنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابࣰا وَعِظَٰمًا أَءِنَّا لَمَدِينُونَ ۝٥٣Can we, when we are dead and have become mere dust and bones - can we (then) verily be brought to book.54قَالَ هَلۡ أَنتُم مُّطَّلِعُونَ ۝٥٤He saith: Will ye look.55فَٱطَّلَعَ فَرَءَاهُ فِي سَوَآءِ ٱلۡجَحِيمِ ۝٥٥Then looketh he and seeth him in the depth of hell.56قَالَ تَٱللَّهِ إِن كِدتَّ لَتُرۡدِينِ ۝٥٦He saith: By Allah, thou verily didst all but cause my ruin.57وَلَوۡلَا نِعۡمَةُ رَبِّي لَكُنتُ مِنَ ٱلۡمُحۡضَرِينَ ۝٥٧And had it not been for the favour of my Lord, I too had been of those haled forth (to doom).58أَفَمَا نَحۡنُ بِمَيِّتِينَ ۝٥٨Are we then not to die.59إِلَّا مَوۡتَتَنَا ٱلۡأُولَىٰ وَمَا نَحۡنُ بِمُعَذَّبِينَ ۝٥٩Saving our former death, and are we not to be punished.60إِنَّ هَٰذَا لَهُوَ ٱلۡفَوۡزُ ٱلۡعَظِيمُ ۝٦٠Lo! this is the supreme triumph.61لِمِثۡلِ هَٰذَا فَلۡيَعۡمَلِ ٱلۡعَٰمِلُونَ ۝٦١For the like of this, then, let the workers work.62أَذَٰلِكَ خَيۡرࣱ نُّزُلًا أَمۡ شَجَرَةُ ٱلزَّقُّومِ ۝٦٢Is this better as a welcome, or the tree of Zaqqum.InsightElmalılı explains “nuzul” as what is offered to a guest on arrival; what is offered to the people of Paradise is only the first hospitality for newcomers.63إِنَّا جَعَلۡنَٰهَا فِتۡنَةࣰ لِّلظَّـٰلِمِينَ ۝٦٣Lo! We have appointed it a torment for wrong-doers.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, wrongdoers are tempted by it in this world and suffer its torment in the Hereafter; devouring people through injustice is itself a zaqqum.64إِنَّهَا شَجَرَةࣱ تَخۡرُجُ فِيٓ أَصۡلِ ٱلۡجَحِيمِ ۝٦٤Lo! it is a tree that springeth in the heart of hell.65طَلۡعُهَا كَأَنَّهُۥ رُءُوسُ ٱلشَّيَٰطِينِ ۝٦٥Its crop is as it were the heads of devils.InsightElmalılı gives three meanings: an imagined comparison conveying extreme ugliness, an ugly kind of snake, or an ugly plant.66فَإِنَّهُمۡ لَأٓكِلُونَ مِنۡهَا فَمَالِـُٔونَ مِنۡهَا ٱلۡبُطُونَ ۝٦٦And lo! they verily must eat thereof, and fill (their) bellies therewith.67ثُمَّ إِنَّ لَهُمۡ عَلَيۡهَا لَشَوۡبࣰا مِّنۡ حَمِيمࣲ ۝٦٧And afterward, lo! thereupon they have a drink of boiling water.InsightElmalılı explains “shawb” as a mixture added to a drink, and “hamim” as boiling water.68ثُمَّ إِنَّ مَرۡجِعَهُمۡ لَإِلَى ٱلۡجَحِيمِ ۝٦٨And afterward, lo! their return is surely unto hell.69إِنَّهُمۡ أَلۡفَوۡاْ ءَابَآءَهُمۡ ضَآلِّينَ ۝٦٩They indeed found their fathers astray.70فَهُمۡ عَلَىٰٓ ءَاثَٰرِهِمۡ يُهۡرَعُونَ ۝٧٠But they make haste (to follow) in their footsteps.71وَلَقَدۡ ضَلَّ قَبۡلَهُمۡ أَكۡثَرُ ٱلۡأَوَّلِينَ ۝٧١And verily most of the men of old went astray before them.72وَلَقَدۡ أَرۡسَلۡنَا فِيهِم مُّنذِرِينَ ۝٧٢And verily We sent among them warners.73فَٱنظُرۡ كَيۡفَ كَانَ عَٰقِبَةُ ٱلۡمُنذَرِينَ ۝٧٣Then see the nature of the consequence for those warned.74إِلَّا عِبَادَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡمُخۡلَصِينَ ۝٧٤Save single-minded slaves of Allah.75وَلَقَدۡ نَادَىٰنَا نُوحࣱ فَلَنِعۡمَ ٱلۡمُجِيبُونَ ۝٧٥And Noah verily prayed unto Us, and gracious was the Hearer of his prayer.76وَنَجَّيۡنَٰهُ وَأَهۡلَهُۥ مِنَ ٱلۡكَرۡبِ ٱلۡعَظِيمِ ۝٧٦And We saved him and his household from the great distress.77وَجَعَلۡنَا ذُرِّيَّتَهُۥ هُمُ ٱلۡبَاقِينَ ۝٧٧And made his seed the survivors.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, apart from Noah’s three sons, Shem, Ham and Japheth, and their wives, all in the ark died without offspring; humanity continued from them.78وَتَرَكۡنَا عَلَيۡهِ فِي ٱلۡأٓخِرِينَ ۝٧٨And left for him among the later folk (the salutation).InsightAccording to Elmalılı, this is Noah’s name being mentioned with honour among later generations.79سَلَٰمٌ عَلَىٰ نُوحࣲ فِي ٱلۡعَٰلَمِينَ ۝٧٩Peace be unto Noah among the peoples.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, this is a greeting of peace from Allah, or a narration of later generations greeting him.80إِنَّا كَذَٰلِكَ نَجۡزِي ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِينَ ۝٨٠Lo! thus do We reward the good.81إِنَّهُۥ مِنۡ عِبَادِنَا ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ ۝٨١Lo! he is one of Our believing slaves.82ثُمَّ أَغۡرَقۡنَا ٱلۡأٓخَرِينَ ۝٨٢Then We did drown the others.83۞وَإِنَّ مِن شِيعَتِهِۦ لَإِبۡرَٰهِيمَ ۝٨٣And lo! of his persuasion verily was Abraham.InsightElmalılı explains “shi‘ah” as followers walking in someone’s footsteps: Abraham followed Noah in faith and sincerity.84إِذۡ جَآءَ رَبَّهُۥ بِقَلۡبࣲ سَلِيمٍ ۝٨٤When he came unto his Lord with a whole heart.85إِذۡ قَالَ لِأَبِيهِ وَقَوۡمِهِۦ مَاذَا تَعۡبُدُونَ ۝٨٥When he said unto his father and his folk: What is it that ye worship.86أَئِفۡكًا ءَالِهَةࣰ دُونَ ٱللَّهِ تُرِيدُونَ ۝٨٦Is it a falsehood - gods beside Allah - that ye desire.InsightElmalılı explains “ifk” as lie and slander: saying there is a god besides Allah is lying and slander.87فَمَا ظَنُّكُم بِرَبِّ ٱلۡعَٰلَمِينَ ۝٨٧What then is your opinion of the Lord of the Worlds.88فَنَظَرَ نَظۡرَةࣰ فِي ٱلنُّجُومِ ۝٨٨And he glanced a glance at the stars.89فَقَالَ إِنِّي سَقِيمࣱ ۝٨٩Then said: Lo! I feel sick.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, because they invited him to worship with them, Abraham glanced at the stars; he wanted to be left alone with the idols.90فَتَوَلَّوۡاْ عَنۡهُ مُدۡبِرِينَ ۝٩٠And they turned their backs and went away from him.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, they feared illness and plague; the expression is very subtle: when he said he was ill they fled, then when he struck they came rushing back.91فَرَاغَ إِلَىٰٓ ءَالِهَتِهِمۡ فَقَالَ أَلَا تَأۡكُلُونَ ۝٩١Then turned he to their gods and said: Will ye not eat.92مَا لَكُمۡ لَا تَنطِقُونَ ۝٩٢What aileth you that ye speak not.93فَرَاغَ عَلَيۡهِمۡ ضَرۡبَۢا بِٱلۡيَمِينِ ۝٩٣Then he attacked them, striking with his right hand.94فَأَقۡبَلُوٓاْ إِلَيۡهِ يَزِفُّونَ ۝٩٤And (his people) came toward him, hastening.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, their rushing at him in a crowd depicts the psychology of ordinary people and mobs.95قَالَ أَتَعۡبُدُونَ مَا تَنۡحِتُونَ ۝٩٥He said: Worship ye that which ye yourselves do carve.96وَٱللَّهُ خَلَقَكُمۡ وَمَا تَعۡمَلُونَ ۝٩٦When Allah hath created you and what ye make.97قَالُواْ ٱبۡنُواْ لَهُۥ بُنۡيَٰنࣰا فَأَلۡقُوهُ فِي ٱلۡجَحِيمِ ۝٩٧They said: Build for him a building and fling him in the red-hotfire.98فَأَرَادُواْ بِهِۦ كَيۡدࣰا فَجَعَلۡنَٰهُمُ ٱلۡأَسۡفَلِينَ ۝٩٨And they designed a snare for him, but We made them the undermost.99وَقَالَ إِنِّي ذَاهِبٌ إِلَىٰ رَبِّي سَيَهۡدِينِ ۝٩٩And he said: Lo! I am going unto my Lord Who will guide me.100رَبِّ هَبۡ لِي مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰلِحِينَ ۝١٠٠My Lord! Vouchsafe me of the righteous.101فَبَشَّرۡنَٰهُ بِغُلَٰمٍ حَلِيمࣲ ۝١٠١ And when (his son) was old enough to walk with him, (Abraham) said: O my dear son, I have seen in a dream that I must sacrifice thee. So look, what thinkest thou? He said: O my father! Do that which thou art commanded. Allah willing, thou shalt find me of the steadfast.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, when his son reached the age of working, Abraham showed him an act of obedience to be done for Allah and asked his view.103فَلَمَّآ أَسۡلَمَا وَتَلَّهُۥ لِلۡجَبِينِ ۝١٠٣Then, when they had both surrendered (to Allah), and he had flung him down upon his face.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, both surrendered themselves to Allah’s command; Abraham laid him on his temple. This took place at Mina.104وَنَٰدَيۡنَٰهُ أَن يَـٰٓإِبۡرَٰهِيمُ ۝١٠٤We called unto him: O Abraham.105قَدۡ صَدَّقۡتَ ٱلرُّءۡيَآۚ إِنَّا كَذَٰلِكَ نَجۡزِي ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِينَ ۝١٠٥Thou hast already fulfilled the vision.
