Surah Sad
The Letter "Saad" · Surah 38 · Meccan · 88 verses
1صٓۚ وَٱلۡقُرۡءَانِ ذِي ٱلذِّكۡرِ ١Sad. By the renowned Qur’an.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, “Sad” is a letter in writing; in pronunciation it may be a name or a command. And the Qur’an is full of dhikr: reminder and honour.2بَلِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ فِي عِزَّةࣲ وَشِقَاقࣲ ٢Nay, but those who disbelieve are in false pride and schism.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, pride and division have gripped them; out of arrogance they reject the truth and fight over various gods for different aims.3كَمۡ أَهۡلَكۡنَا مِن قَبۡلِهِم مِّن قَرۡنࣲ فَنَادَواْ وَّلَاتَ حِينَ مَنَاصࣲ ٣How many a generation We destroyed before them, and they cried out when it was no longer the time for escape.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, when they saw destruction they repented and cried “O my Lord!”; but by then it was no time for escape or rescue.4وَعَجِبُوٓاْ أَن جَآءَهُم مُّنذِرࣱ مِّنۡهُمۡۖ وَقَالَ ٱلۡكَٰفِرُونَ هَٰذَا سَٰحِرࣱ كَذَّابٌ ٤And they marvel that a warner from among themselves hath come unto them, and the disbelievers say: This is a wizard, a charlatan.5أَجَعَلَ ٱلۡأٓلِهَةَ إِلَٰهࣰا وَٰحِدًاۖ إِنَّ هَٰذَا لَشَيۡءٌ عُجَابࣱ ٥Maketh he the gods One Allah? Lo! that is an astounding thing.6وَٱنطَلَقَ ٱلۡمَلَأُ مِنۡهُمۡ أَنِ ٱمۡشُواْ وَٱصۡبِرُواْ عَلَىٰٓ ءَالِهَتِكُمۡۖ إِنَّ هَٰذَا لَشَيۡءࣱ يُرَادُ ٦The chiefs among them go about, exhorting: Go and be staunch to your gods! Lo! this is a thing designed.7مَا سَمِعۡنَا بِهَٰذَا فِي ٱلۡمِلَّةِ ٱلۡأٓخِرَةِ إِنۡ هَٰذَآ إِلَّا ٱخۡتِلَٰقٌ ٧We have not heard of this in later religion. This is naught but an invention.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, “the latest religion” may refer to Christianity, widespread before Islam; they claimed not to have heard tawhid even there.8أَءُنزِلَ عَلَيۡهِ ٱلذِّكۡرُ مِنۢ بَيۡنِنَاۚ بَلۡ هُمۡ فِي شَكࣲّ مِّن ذِكۡرِيۚ بَل لَّمَّا يَذُوقُواْ عَذَابِ ٨Hath the reminder been unto him (alone) among us? Nay, but they are in doubt concerning My reminder; nay but they have not yet tasted My doom.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, this is the Qur’an, containing Allah’s reminder; they doubt because they have not yet tasted the punishment.9أَمۡ عِندَهُمۡ خَزَآئِنُ رَحۡمَةِ رَبِّكَ ٱلۡعَزِيزِ ٱلۡوَهَّابِ ٩Or are theirs the treasures of the mercy of thy Lord, the Mighty, the Bestower.10أَمۡ لَهُم مُّلۡكُ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَمَا بَيۡنَهُمَاۖ فَلۡيَرۡتَقُواْ فِي ٱلۡأَسۡبَٰبِ ١٠Or is the kingdom of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them theirs? Then let them ascend by ropes.11جُندࣱ مَّا هُنَالِكَ مَهۡزُومࣱ مِّنَ ٱلۡأَحۡزَابِ ١١A defeated host are (all) the factions that are there.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, they are the remnants of various factions that once gathered against the prophets and perished; like them they are doomed to defeat.12كَذَّبَتۡ قَبۡلَهُمۡ قَوۡمُ نُوحࣲ وَعَادࣱ وَفِرۡعَوۡنُ ذُو ٱلۡأَوۡتَادِ ١٢The folk of Noah before them denied (their messenger) and (so did the tribe of) A’ad, and Pharaoh firmly planted.13وَثَمُودُ وَقَوۡمُ لُوطࣲ وَأَصۡحَٰبُ لۡـَٔيۡكَةِۚ أُوْلَـٰٓئِكَ ٱلۡأَحۡزَابُ ١٣And (the tribe of) Thamud, and the folk of Lot, and the dwellers in the wood: these were the factions.14إِن كُلٌّ إِلَّا كَذَّبَ ٱلرُّسُلَ فَحَقَّ عِقَابِ ١٤Not one of them but did deny the messengers, therefor My doom was justified.15وَمَا يَنظُرُ هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ إِلَّا صَيۡحَةࣰ وَٰحِدَةࣰ مَّا لَهَا مِن فَوَاقࣲ ١٥These wait for but one Shout, there will be no second thereto.16وَقَالُواْ رَبَّنَا عَجِّل لَّنَا قِطَّنَا قَبۡلَ يَوۡمِ ٱلۡحِسَابِ ١٦They say: Our Lord! Hasten on for us our fate before the Day of Reckoning.InsightElmalılı explains “qitt” as originally a voucher of gifts, here a share: “No need to wait for the Resurrection; give us our punishment in advance,” they said.17ٱصۡبِرۡ عَلَىٰ مَا يَقُولُونَ وَٱذۡكُرۡ عَبۡدَنَا دَاوُۥدَ ذَا ٱلۡأَيۡدِۖ إِنَّهُۥٓ أَوَّابٌ ١٧Bear with what they say, and remember Our bondman David, lord of might, Lo! he was ever turning in repentance (toward Allah).InsightAccording to Elmalılı, David fasted one day and broke fast the next, and rose for prayer at midnight; the root of his strength was the strength of religion.18إِنَّا سَخَّرۡنَا ٱلۡجِبَالَ مَعَهُۥ يُسَبِّحۡنَ بِٱلۡعَشِيِّ وَٱلۡإِشۡرَاقِ ١٨Lo! We subdued the hills to hymn the praises (of their Lord) with him at nightfall and sunrise.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, the apparent meaning is that the mountains glorified aloud with him.19وَٱلطَّيۡرَ مَحۡشُورَةࣰۖ كُلࣱّ لَّهُۥٓ أَوَّابࣱ ١٩And the birds assembled; all were turning unto Him.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, both the mountains and the birds repeated the glorification in harmony with David.20وَشَدَدۡنَا مُلۡكَهُۥ وَءَاتَيۡنَٰهُ ٱلۡحِكۡمَةَ وَفَصۡلَ ٱلۡخِطَابِ ٢٠We made his kingdom strong and gave him wisdom and decisive speech.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, “fasl al-khitab” is cutting speech decisively: the clear judgement that separates truth from falsehood.21۞وَهَلۡ أَتَىٰكَ نَبَؤُاْ ٱلۡخَصۡمِ إِذۡ تَسَوَّرُواْ ٱلۡمِحۡرَابَ ٢١And hath the story of the litigants come unto thee? How they climbed the wall into the royal chamber.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, the question form draws attention to the story’s importance.22إِذۡ دَخَلُواْ عَلَىٰ دَاوُۥدَ فَفَزِعَ مِنۡهُمۡۖ قَالُواْ لَا تَخَفۡۖ خَصۡمَانِ بَغَىٰ بَعۡضُنَا عَلَىٰ بَعۡضࣲ فَٱحۡكُم بَيۡنَنَا بِٱلۡحَقِّ وَلَا تُشۡطِطۡ وَٱهۡدِنَآ إِلَىٰ سَوَآءِ ٱلصِّرَٰطِ ٢٢How they burst in upon David, and he was afraid of them. They said: Be not afraid! (We are) two litigants, one of whom hath wronged the other, therefor judge aright between us; be not unjust; and show us the fair way.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, the wall being scaled despite so many guards alarmed David.23إِنَّ هَٰذَآ أَخِي لَهُۥ تِسۡعࣱ وَتِسۡعُونَ نَعۡجَةࣰ وَلِيَ نَعۡجَةࣱ وَٰحِدَةࣱ فَقَالَ أَكۡفِلۡنِيهَا وَعَزَّنِي فِي ٱلۡخِطَابِ ٢٣Lo! this my brother hath ninety and nine ewes while I had one ewe; and he said: Entrust it to me, and he conquered me in speech.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, “brother” has been explained as brother in faith or companion.24قَالَ لَقَدۡ ظَلَمَكَ بِسُؤَالِ نَعۡجَتِكَ إِلَىٰ نِعَاجِهِۦۖ وَإِنَّ كَثِيرࣰا مِّنَ ٱلۡخُلَطَآءِ لَيَبۡغِي بَعۡضُهُمۡ عَلَىٰ بَعۡضٍ إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَعَمِلُواْ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَٰتِ وَقَلِيلࣱ مَّا هُمۡۗ وَظَنَّ دَاوُۥدُ أَنَّمَا فَتَنَّـٰهُ فَٱسۡتَغۡفَرَ رَبَّهُۥ وَخَرَّۤ رَاكِعࣰاۤ وَأَنَابَ۩ ٢٤(David) said: He hath wronged thee in demanding thine ewe in addition to his ewes, and lo! many partners oppress one another, save such as believe and do good works, and they are few. And David guessed that We had tried him, and he sought forgiveness of his Lord, and he bowed himself and fell down prostrate and repented.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, this is a verse of prostration; injustice is common in partnerships, but faith and good deeds protect one from it.25فَغَفَرۡنَا لَهُۥ ذَٰلِكَۖ وَإِنَّ لَهُۥ عِندَنَا لَزُلۡفَىٰ وَحُسۡنَ مَـَٔابࣲ ٢٥So We forgave him that; and lo! he had access to Our presence and a happy journey’s end.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, as his kingdom’s power could not stop the wall being scaled, David too realised a fault, repented and was forgiven.26يَٰدَاوُۥدُ إِنَّا جَعَلۡنَٰكَ خَلِيفَةࣰ فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِ فَٱحۡكُم بَيۡنَ ٱلنَّاسِ بِٱلۡحَقِّ وَلَا تَتَّبِعِ ٱلۡهَوَىٰ فَيُضِلَّكَ عَن سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِۚ إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ يَضِلُّونَ عَن سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ لَهُمۡ عَذَابࣱ شَدِيدُۢ بِمَا نَسُواْ يَوۡمَ ٱلۡحِسَابِ ٢٦(And it was said unto him): O David! Lo! We have set thee as a viceroy in the earth; therefor judge aright between mankind, and follow not desire that it beguile thee from the way of Allah. Lo! those who wander from the way of Allah have an awful doom, forasmuch as they forgot the Day of Reckoning.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, this is ruling not by one’s own whim but in Allah’s name, to carry out His rulings.27وَمَا خَلَقۡنَا ٱلسَّمَآءَ وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ وَمَا بَيۡنَهُمَا بَٰطِلࣰاۚ ذَٰلِكَ ظَنُّ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْۚ فَوَيۡلࣱ لِّلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ مِنَ ٱلنَّارِ ٢٧And We created not the heaven and the earth and all that is between them in vain. That is the opinion of those who disbelieve. And woe unto those who disbelieve, from the Fire.28أَمۡ نَجۡعَلُ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَعَمِلُواْ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَٰتِ كَٱلۡمُفۡسِدِينَ فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِ أَمۡ نَجۡعَلُ ٱلۡمُتَّقِينَ كَٱلۡفُجَّارِ ٢٨Shall We treat those who believe and do good works as those who spread corruption in the earth; or shall We treat the pious as the wicked.29كِتَٰبٌ أَنزَلۡنَٰهُ إِلَيۡكَ مُبَٰرَكࣱ لِّيَدَّبَّرُوٓاْ ءَايَٰتِهِۦ وَلِيَتَذَكَّرَ أُوْلُواْ ٱلۡأَلۡبَٰبِ ٢٩(This is) a Scripture that We have revealed unto thee, full of blessing, that they may ponder its revelations, and that men of understanding may reflect.30وَوَهَبۡنَا لِدَاوُۥدَ سُلَيۡمَٰنَۚ نِعۡمَ ٱلۡعَبۡدُ إِنَّهُۥٓ أَوَّابٌ ٣٠And We bestowed on David, Solomon. How excellent a slave! Lo! he was ever turning in repentance (toward Allah).31إِذۡ عُرِضَ عَلَيۡهِ بِٱلۡعَشِيِّ ٱلصَّـٰفِنَٰتُ ٱلۡجِيَادُ ٣١When there were shown to him at eventide lightfooted coursers.InsightElmalılı explains “safinat” as horses standing on three legs with the tip of the fourth hoof raised; the finest stance, found mostly in pure Arab horses.32فَقَالَ إِنِّيٓ أَحۡبَبۡتُ حُبَّ ٱلۡخَيۡرِ عَن ذِكۡرِ رَبِّي حَتَّىٰ تَوَارَتۡ بِٱلۡحِجَابِ ٣٢And he said: Lo! I have preferred the good things (of the world) to the remembrance of my Lord; till they were taken out of sight behind the curtain.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, most commentators explained this as: “Love of wealth and horses kept me from remembering my Lord.”33رُدُّوهَا عَلَيَّۖ فَطَفِقَ مَسۡحَۢا بِٱلسُّوقِ وَٱلۡأَعۡنَاقِ ٣٣(Then he said): Bring them back to me, and fell to slashing (with his sword their) legs and necks.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, this is him caressing the horses and caring for them; earlier commentators explained it as striking them with the sword.34وَلَقَدۡ فَتَنَّا سُلَيۡمَٰنَ وَأَلۡقَيۡنَا عَلَىٰ كُرۡسِيِّهِۦ جَسَدࣰا ثُمَّ أَنَابَ ٣٤And verily We tried Solomon, and set upon his throne a (mere) body. Then did he repent.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, some strange reports have been told about this trial; what matters is that Solomon turned back to Allah after it.35قَالَ رَبِّ ٱغۡفِرۡ لِي وَهَبۡ لِي مُلۡكࣰا لَّا يَنۢبَغِي لِأَحَدࣲ مِّنۢ بَعۡدِيٓۖ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ ٱلۡوَهَّابُ ٣٥He said: My Lord! Forgive me and bestow on me sovereignty such as shall not belong to any after me. Lo! Thou art the Bestower.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, Solomon first asked forgiveness: “Cover by Your pardon whatever fault occurred”; then he asked for a kingdom.36فَسَخَّرۡنَا لَهُ ٱلرِّيحَ تَجۡرِي بِأَمۡرِهِۦ رُخَآءً حَيۡثُ أَصَابَ ٣٦So We made the wind subservient unto him, setting fair by his command whithersoever he intended.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, there is also a hint here that worldly dominion comes and goes like the wind.37وَٱلشَّيَٰطِينَ كُلَّ بَنَّآءࣲ وَغَوَّاصࣲ ٣٧And the unruly, every builder and diver (made We subservient).InsightAccording to Elmalılı, even the devils, the source of mischief, were made subject to him; this includes certain geniuses of craft among them.38وَءَاخَرِينَ مُقَرَّنِينَ فِي ٱلۡأَصۡفَادِ ٣٨And others linked together in chains.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, these cover other craftsmen, ranging from human devils to jinn devils; their evil was chained.39هَٰذَا عَطَآؤُنَا فَٱمۡنُنۡ أَوۡ أَمۡسِكۡ بِغَيۡرِ حِسَابࣲ ٣٩(Saying): This is Our gift, so bestow thou, or withhold, without reckoning.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, this dominion and subjection is Allah’s gift; he was free to be generous to whom he wished.40وَإِنَّ لَهُۥ عِندَنَا لَزُلۡفَىٰ وَحُسۡنَ مَـَٔابࣲ ٤٠And lo! he hath favour with Us, and a happy journey’s end.41وَٱذۡكُرۡ عَبۡدَنَآ أَيُّوبَ إِذۡ نَادَىٰ رَبَّهُۥٓ أَنِّي مَسَّنِيَ ٱلشَّيۡطَٰنُ بِنُصۡبࣲ وَعَذَابٍ ٤١And make mention (O Muhammad) of Our bondman Job, when he cried unto his Lord (saying): Lo! the devil doth afflict me with distress and torment.42ٱرۡكُضۡ بِرِجۡلِكَۖ هَٰذَا مُغۡتَسَلُۢ بَارِدࣱ وَشَرَابࣱ ٤٢(And it was said unto him): Strike the ground with thy foot. This (spring) is a cool bath and a refreshing drink.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, it is very notable that Allah’s answer to Job’s prayer was tied to his own action.43وَوَهَبۡنَا لَهُۥٓ أَهۡلَهُۥ وَمِثۡلَهُم مَّعَهُمۡ رَحۡمَةࣰ مِّنَّا وَذِكۡرَىٰ لِأُوْلِي ٱلۡأَلۡبَٰبِ ٤٣And We bestowed on him (again) his household and therewith the like thereof, a mercy from Us, and a memorial for men of understanding.44وَخُذۡ بِيَدِكَ ضِغۡثࣰا فَٱضۡرِب بِّهِۦ وَلَا تَحۡنَثۡۗ إِنَّا وَجَدۡنَٰهُ صَابِرࣰاۚ نِّعۡمَ ٱلۡعَبۡدُ إِنَّهُۥٓ أَوَّابࣱ ٤٤And (it was said unto him): Take in thine hand a branch and smite therewith, and break not thine oath. Lo! We found him steadfast, how excellent a slave! Lo! he was ever turning in repentance (to his Lord).InsightAccording to Elmalılı, Job had sworn to strike his wife a hundred times over an incident; Allah let him fulfil it by striking once with a bunch.45وَٱذۡكُرۡ عِبَٰدَنَآ إِبۡرَٰهِيمَ وَإِسۡحَٰقَ وَيَعۡقُوبَ أُوْلِي ٱلۡأَيۡدِي وَٱلۡأَبۡصَٰرِ ٤٥And make mention of Our bondmen, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, men of parts and vision.46إِنَّآ أَخۡلَصۡنَٰهُم بِخَالِصَةࣲ ذِكۡرَى ٱلدَّارِ ٤٦Lo! We purified them with a pure thought, remembrance of the Home (of the Hereafter).InsightAccording to Elmalılı, this is a spotless trait: thinking of the home of the Hereafter.47وَإِنَّهُمۡ عِندَنَا لَمِنَ ٱلۡمُصۡطَفَيۡنَ ٱلۡأَخۡيَارِ ٤٧Lo! in Our sight they are verily of the elect, the excellent.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, these are not those who spent their lives in pleasure, but those who are best with Allah.48وَٱذۡكُرۡ إِسۡمَٰعِيلَ وَٱلۡيَسَعَ وَذَا ٱلۡكِفۡلِۖ وَكُلࣱّ مِّنَ ٱلۡأَخۡيَارِ ٤٨And make mention of Ishmael and Elisha and Dhu’l-Kifl. All are of the chosen.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, mentioning Ishmael separately from his father Abraham and brother Isaac shows special regard for his status.49هَٰذَا ذِكۡرࣱۚ وَإِنَّ لِلۡمُتَّقِينَ لَحُسۡنَ مَـَٔابࣲ ٤٩This is a reminder. And lo! for those who ward off (evil) is a happy journey’s end.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, the virtues mentioned in these verses are an honourable memorial, always to be kept in mind and learned from.50جَنَّـٰتِ عَدۡنࣲ مُّفَتَّحَةࣰ لَّهُمُ ٱلۡأَبۡوَٰبُ ٥٠Gardens of Eden, whereof the gates are opened for them.51مُتَّكِـِٔينَ فِيهَا يَدۡعُونَ فِيهَا بِفَٰكِهَةࣲ كَثِيرَةࣲ وَشَرَابࣲ ٥١Wherein, reclining, they call for plenteous fruit and cool drink (that is) therein.52۞وَعِندَهُمۡ قَٰصِرَٰتُ ٱلطَّرۡفِ أَتۡرَابٌ ٥٢And with them are those of modest gaze, companions.53هَٰذَا مَا تُوعَدُونَ لِيَوۡمِ ٱلۡحِسَابِ ٥٣This it is that ye are promised for the Day of Reckoning.54إِنَّ هَٰذَا لَرِزۡقُنَا مَا لَهُۥ مِن نَّفَادٍ ٥٤Lo! this in truth is Our provision, which will never waste away.55هَٰذَاۚ وَإِنَّ لِلطَّـٰغِينَ لَشَرَّ مَـَٔابࣲ ٥٥This (is for the righteous). And lo! for the transgressors there with be an evil journey’s end.56جَهَنَّمَ يَصۡلَوۡنَهَا فَبِئۡسَ ٱلۡمِهَادُ ٥٦Hell, where they will burn, an evil resting-place.57هَٰذَا فَلۡيَذُوقُوهُ حَمِيمࣱ وَغَسَّاقࣱ ٥٧Here is a boiling and an ice-cold draught, so let them taste it.InsightElmalılı explains “ghassaq” as yellow fluid from wounds, pus, or a drink so cold and foul-smelling it cannot be drunk.58وَءَاخَرُ مِن شَكۡلِهِۦٓ أَزۡوَٰجٌ ٥٨And other (torment) of the kind in pairs (the two extremes).59هَٰذَا فَوۡجࣱ مُّقۡتَحِمࣱ مَّعَكُمۡ لَا مَرۡحَبَۢا بِهِمۡۚ إِنَّهُمۡ صَالُواْ ٱلنَّارِ ٥٩Here is an army rushing blindly with you. (Those who are already in the Fire say): No word of welcome for them. Lo! they will roast at the Fire.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, this is what the arrogant leaders say as they enter Hell with their followers; “iqtiham” is forcing one’s way in.60قَالُواْ بَلۡ أَنتُمۡ لَا مَرۡحَبَۢا بِكُمۡۖ أَنتُمۡ قَدَّمۡتُمُوهُ لَنَاۖ فَبِئۡسَ ٱلۡقَرَارُ ٦٠They say: Nay, but you (misleaders), for you there is no word of welcome. Ye prepared this for us (by your misleading). Now hapless is the plight.61قَالُواْ رَبَّنَا مَن قَدَّمَ لَنَا هَٰذَا فَزِدۡهُ عَذَابࣰا ضِعۡفࣰا فِي ٱلنَّارِ ٦١They say: Our Lord! Whoever did prepare this for us, oh, give him double portion of the Fire.62وَقَالُواْ مَا لَنَا لَا نَرَىٰ رِجَالࣰا كُنَّا نَعُدُّهُم مِّنَ ٱلۡأَشۡرَارِ ٦٢And they say: What aileth us that we behold not men whom we were wont to count among the wicked.63أَتَّخَذۡنَٰهُمۡ سِخۡرِيًّا أَمۡ زَاغَتۡ عَنۡهُمُ ٱلۡأَبۡصَٰرُ ٦٣Did we take them (wrongly) for a laughing-stock, or have our eyes missed them.64إِنَّ ذَٰلِكَ لَحَقࣱّ تَخَاصُمُ أَهۡلِ ٱلنَّارِ ٦٤Lo! that is very truth: the wrangling of the dwellers in the Fire.65قُلۡ إِنَّمَآ أَنَا۠ مُنذِرࣱۖ وَمَا مِنۡ إِلَٰهٍ إِلَّا ٱللَّهُ ٱلۡوَٰحِدُ ٱلۡقَهَّارُ ٦٥Say (unto them, O Muhammad): I am only a warner, and there is no Allah save Allah, the One, the Absolute.66رَبُّ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَمَا بَيۡنَهُمَا ٱلۡعَزِيزُ ٱلۡغَفَّـٰرُ ٦٦Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, the Mighty, the Pardoning.67قُلۡ هُوَ نَبَؤٌاْ عَظِيمٌ ٦٧Say: It is tremendous tidings.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, this news I bring you, my prophethood and Allah’s oneness free of partners, is news of great importance.68أَنتُمۡ عَنۡهُ مُعۡرِضُونَ ٦٨Whence ye turn away.69مَا كَانَ لِيَ مِنۡ عِلۡمِۭ بِٱلۡمَلَإِ ٱلۡأَعۡلَىٰٓ إِذۡ يَخۡتَصِمُونَ ٦٩I had no knowledge of the Highest Chiefs when they disputed.70إِن يُوحَىٰٓ إِلَيَّ إِلَّآ أَنَّمَآ أَنَا۠ نَذِيرࣱ مُّبِينٌ ٧٠It is revealed unto me only that I may be a plain warner.71إِذۡ قَالَ رَبُّكَ لِلۡمَلَـٰٓئِكَةِ إِنِّي خَٰلِقُۢ بَشَرࣰا مِّن طِينࣲ ٧١When thy Lord said unto the angels: Lo! I am about to create a mortal out of mire.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, this is the angels’ discussion described in al-Baqarah.72فَإِذَا سَوَّيۡتُهُۥ وَنَفَخۡتُ فِيهِ مِن رُّوحِي فَقَعُواْ لَهُۥ سَٰجِدِينَ ٧٢And when I have fashioned him and breathed into him of My Spirit, then fall down before him prostrate.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, proportioning comes after creating; after man’s substance was created from clay, it took on human form.73فَسَجَدَ ٱلۡمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُ كُلُّهُمۡ أَجۡمَعُونَ ٧٣The angels fell down prostrate, every one.74إِلَّآ إِبۡلِيسَ ٱسۡتَكۡبَرَ وَكَانَ مِنَ ٱلۡكَٰفِرِينَ ٧٤Saving Iblis; he was scornful and became one of the disbelievers.75قَالَ يَـٰٓإِبۡلِيسُ مَا مَنَعَكَ أَن تَسۡجُدَ لِمَا خَلَقۡتُ بِيَدَيَّۖ أَسۡتَكۡبَرۡتَ أَمۡ كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلۡعَالِينَ ٧٥He said: O Iblis! What hindereth thee from falling prostrate before that which I have created with both My hands? Art thou too proud or art thou of the high exalted.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, the Qur’an attributes “hand” to Allah sometimes singular, sometimes plural, and here dual; this shows the special importance given to man’s creation.76قَالَ أَنَا۠ خَيۡرࣱ مِّنۡهُ خَلَقۡتَنِي مِن نَّارࣲ وَخَلَقۡتَهُۥ مِن طِينࣲ ٧٦He said: I am better than him.
