I Am Better Than Him
قَالَ أَنَا۠ خَيۡرࣱ مِّنۡهُ خَلَقۡتَنِي مِن نَّارࣲ وَخَلَقۡتَهُۥ مِن طِينࣲ ٧٦
He said: I am better than him. Thou createdst me of fire, whilst him Thou didst create of clay.
Translation: Marmaduke Pickthall
Meaning
“I am better than him; You created me from fire and him from clay.”
Insight
According to Elmalılı, Iblis’s arrogance came from boasting of the substance he was made from; yet superiority lies not in substance but in obedience.
