1حمٓ ١Ha. Mim.2وَٱلۡكِتَٰبِ ٱلۡمُبِينِ ٢By the Scripture which maketh plain.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, this is the bright Book, a light that shows Allah’s way plainly.3إِنَّا جَعَلۡنَٰهُ قُرۡءَٰنًا عَرَبِيࣰّا لَّعَلَّكُمۡ تَعۡقِلُونَ ٣Lo! We have appointed it a Lecture, in Arabic that haply ye may understand.4وَإِنَّهُۥ فِيٓ أُمِّ ٱلۡكِتَٰبِ لَدَيۡنَا لَعَلِيٌّ حَكِيمٌ ٤And Lo! in the Source of Decrees, which We possess, it is indeed sublime, decisive.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, the Mother of the Book is the Preserved Tablet, or divine knowledge, its source; the Qur’an is loftier than all revealed books.5أَفَنَضۡرِبُ عَنكُمُ ٱلذِّكۡرَ صَفۡحًا أَن كُنتُمۡ قَوۡمࣰا مُّسۡرِفِينَ ٥Shall We utterly ignore you because ye are a wanton folk.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, this conveys that even if you persist in disbelief and wrong, We will not stop sending the Qur’an; this too is Allah’s mercy.6وَكَمۡ أَرۡسَلۡنَا مِن نَّبِيࣲّ فِي ٱلۡأَوَّلِينَ ٦How many a prophet did We send among the men of old.7وَمَا يَأۡتِيهِم مِّن نَّبِيٍّ إِلَّا كَانُواْ بِهِۦ يَسۡتَهۡزِءُونَ ٧And never came there unto them a prophet but they used to mock him.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, the transgression of earlier peoples is described; those stronger than them were destroyed.8فَأَهۡلَكۡنَآ أَشَدَّ مِنۡهُم بَطۡشࣰا وَمَضَىٰ مَثَلُ ٱلۡأَوَّلِينَ ٨Then We destroyed men mightier than these in prowess; and the example of the men of old hath gone (before them).9وَلَئِن سَأَلۡتَهُم مَّنۡ خَلَقَ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ لَيَقُولُنَّ خَلَقَهُنَّ ٱلۡعَزِيزُ ٱلۡعَلِيمُ ٩And if thou (Muhammad) ask them: Who created the heavens and the earth, they will surely answer: The Mighty, the Knower created them.10ٱلَّذِي جَعَلَ لَكُمُ ٱلۡأَرۡضَ مَهۡدࣰا وَجَعَلَ لَكُمۡ فِيهَا سُبُلࣰا لَّعَلَّكُمۡ تَهۡتَدُونَ ١٠Who made the earth a resting-place for you, and placed roads for you therein, that haply ye may find your way.11وَٱلَّذِي نَزَّلَ مِنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ مَآءَۢ بِقَدَرࣲ فَأَنشَرۡنَا بِهِۦ بَلۡدَةࣰ مَّيۡتࣰاۚ كَذَٰلِكَ تُخۡرَجُونَ ١١And Who sendeth down water from the sky in (due) measure, and We revive a dead land therewith. Even so will ye be brought forth.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, through the Qur’an, which is a spirit, you too will be brought to an entirely new life, both in this world and the next.12وَٱلَّذِي خَلَقَ ٱلۡأَزۡوَٰجَ كُلَّهَا وَجَعَلَ لَكُم مِّنَ ٱلۡفُلۡكِ وَٱلۡأَنۡعَٰمِ مَا تَرۡكَبُونَ ١٢He Who created all the pairs, and appointed for you ships and cattle whereupon ye ride.InsightElmalılı relates from ar-Razi the view of some scholars: everything besides Allah comes in pairs; He alone is One.13لِتَسۡتَوُۥاْ عَلَىٰ ظُهُورِهِۦ ثُمَّ تَذۡكُرُواْ نِعۡمَةَ رَبِّكُمۡ إِذَا ٱسۡتَوَيۡتُمۡ عَلَيۡهِ وَتَقُولُواْ سُبۡحَٰنَ ٱلَّذِي سَخَّرَ لَنَا هَٰذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لَهُۥ مُقۡرِنِينَ ١٣That ye may mount upon their backs, and may remember your Lord’s favour when ye mount thereon, and may say: Glorified be He Who hath subdued these unto us, and we were not capable (of subduing them).InsightAccording to Elmalılı, the Prophet would say “Bismillah” when putting his foot in the stirrup, recite this prayer when seated, and say takbir and tahlil three times each.14وَإِنَّآ إِلَىٰ رَبِّنَا لَمُنقَلِبُونَ ١٤And lo! unto our Lord we surely are returning.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, all our turning and travelling is towards Him; in the end we will reach Him. This recalls the greatest aim of Islam.15وَجَعَلُواْ لَهُۥ مِنۡ عِبَادِهِۦ جُزۡءًاۚ إِنَّ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنَ لَكَفُورࣱ مُّبِينٌ ١٥And they allot to Him a portion of His bondmen! Lo! man is verily a mere ingrate.16أَمِ ٱتَّخَذَ مِمَّا يَخۡلُقُ بَنَاتࣲ وَأَصۡفَىٰكُم بِٱلۡبَنِينَ ١٦Or chooseth He daughters of all that He hath created, and honoureth He you with sons.17وَإِذَا بُشِّرَ أَحَدُهُم بِمَا ضَرَبَ لِلرَّحۡمَٰنِ مَثَلࣰا ظَلَّ وَجۡهُهُۥ مُسۡوَدࣰّا وَهُوَ كَظِيمٌ ١٧And if one of them hath tidings of that which he likeneth to the Beneficent One, his countenance becometh black and he is full of inward rage.18أَوَمَن يُنَشَّؤُاْ فِي ٱلۡحِلۡيَةِ وَهُوَ فِي ٱلۡخِصَامِ غَيۡرُ مُبِينࣲ ١٨(Liken they then to Allah) that which is bred up in outward show, and in dispute cannot make itself plain.19وَجَعَلُواْ ٱلۡمَلَـٰٓئِكَةَ ٱلَّذِينَ هُمۡ عِبَٰدُ ٱلرَّحۡمَٰنِ إِنَٰثًاۚ أَشَهِدُواْ خَلۡقَهُمۡۚ سَتُكۡتَبُ شَهَٰدَتُهُمۡ وَيُسۡـَٔلُونَ ١٩And they make the angels, who are the slaves of the Beneficent, females. Did they witness their creation? Their testimony will be recorded and they will be questioned.20وَقَالُواْ لَوۡ شَآءَ ٱلرَّحۡمَٰنُ مَا عَبَدۡنَٰهُمۗ مَّا لَهُم بِذَٰلِكَ مِنۡ عِلۡمٍۖ إِنۡ هُمۡ إِلَّا يَخۡرُصُونَ ٢٠And they say: If the Beneficent One had (so) willed, we should not have worshipped them. They have no knowledge whatsoever of that. They do but guess.21أَمۡ ءَاتَيۡنَٰهُمۡ كِتَٰبࣰا مِّن قَبۡلِهِۦ فَهُم بِهِۦ مُسۡتَمۡسِكُونَ ٢١Or have We given them any scripture before (this Qur’an) so that they are holding fast thereto.22بَلۡ قَالُوٓاْ إِنَّا وَجَدۡنَآ ءَابَآءَنَا عَلَىٰٓ أُمَّةࣲ وَإِنَّا عَلَىٰٓ ءَاثَٰرِهِم مُّهۡتَدُونَ ٢٢Nay, for they say only: Lo! we found our fathers following a religion, and we are guided by their footprints.23وَكَذَٰلِكَ مَآ أَرۡسَلۡنَا مِن قَبۡلِكَ فِي قَرۡيَةࣲ مِّن نَّذِيرٍ إِلَّا قَالَ مُتۡرَفُوهَآ إِنَّا وَجَدۡنَآ ءَابَآءَنَا عَلَىٰٓ أُمَّةࣲ وَإِنَّا عَلَىٰٓ ءَاثَٰرِهِم مُّقۡتَدُونَ ٢٣And even so We sent not a warner before thee (Muhammad) into any township but its luxurious ones said: Lo! we found our fathers following a religion, and we are following their footprints.24۞قَٰلَ أَوَلَوۡ جِئۡتُكُم بِأَهۡدَىٰ مِمَّا وَجَدتُّمۡ عَلَيۡهِ ءَابَآءَكُمۡۖ قَالُوٓاْ إِنَّا بِمَآ أُرۡسِلۡتُم بِهِۦ كَٰفِرُونَ ٢٤(And the warner) said: What! Even though I bring you better guidance than that ye found your fathers following? They answered: Lo! in what ye bring we are disbelievers.25فَٱنتَقَمۡنَا مِنۡهُمۡۖ فَٱنظُرۡ كَيۡفَ كَانَ عَٰقِبَةُ ٱلۡمُكَذِّبِينَ ٢٥So We requited them. Then see the nature of the consequence for the rejecters.26وَإِذۡ قَالَ إِبۡرَٰهِيمُ لِأَبِيهِ وَقَوۡمِهِۦٓ إِنَّنِي بَرَآءࣱ مِّمَّا تَعۡبُدُونَ ٢٦And when Abraham said unto his father and his folk: Lo! I am innocent of what ye worship.27إِلَّا ٱلَّذِي فَطَرَنِي فَإِنَّهُۥ سَيَهۡدِينِ ٢٧Save Him Who did create me, for He will surely guide me.28وَجَعَلَهَا كَلِمَةَۢ بَاقِيَةࣰ فِي عَقِبِهِۦ لَعَلَّهُمۡ يَرۡجِعُونَ ٢٨And he made it a word enduring among his seed, that haply they might return.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, this is the word of tawhid; Abraham left it as a lasting legacy among his descendants.29بَلۡ مَتَّعۡتُ هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ وَءَابَآءَهُمۡ حَتَّىٰ جَآءَهُمُ ٱلۡحَقُّ وَرَسُولࣱ مُّبِينࣱ ٢٩Nay, but I let these and their fathers enjoy life (only) till there should come unto them the Truth and a messenger making plain.30وَلَمَّا جَآءَهُمُ ٱلۡحَقُّ قَالُواْ هَٰذَا سِحۡرࣱ وَإِنَّا بِهِۦ كَٰفِرُونَ ٣٠And now that the Truth hath come unto them they say: This is mere magic, and lo! we are disbelievers therein.31وَقَالُواْ لَوۡلَا نُزِّلَ هَٰذَا ٱلۡقُرۡءَانُ عَلَىٰ رَجُلࣲ مِّنَ ٱلۡقَرۡيَتَيۡنِ عَظِيمٍ ٣١And they say: If only this Qur’an had been revealed to some great man of the two towns.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, the two cities are Mecca and Ta’if; they sensed the Qur’an’s beauty but could not accept it coming to the Prophet.32أَهُمۡ يَقۡسِمُونَ رَحۡمَتَ رَبِّكَۚ نَحۡنُ قَسَمۡنَا بَيۡنَهُم مَّعِيشَتَهُمۡ فِي ٱلۡحَيَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنۡيَاۚ وَرَفَعۡنَا بَعۡضَهُمۡ فَوۡقَ بَعۡضࣲ دَرَجَٰتࣲ لِّيَتَّخِذَ بَعۡضُهُم بَعۡضࣰا سُخۡرِيࣰّاۗ وَرَحۡمَتُ رَبِّكَ خَيۡرࣱ مِّمَّا يَجۡمَعُونَ ٣٢Is it they who apportion thy Lord’s mercy? We have apportioned among them their livelihood in the life of the world, and raised some of them above others in rank that some of them may take labour from others; and the mercy of thy Lord is better than (the wealth) that they amass.33وَلَوۡلَآ أَن يَكُونَ ٱلنَّاسُ أُمَّةࣰ وَٰحِدَةࣰ لَّجَعَلۡنَا لِمَن يَكۡفُرُ بِٱلرَّحۡمَٰنِ لِبُيُوتِهِمۡ سُقُفࣰا مِّن فِضَّةࣲ وَمَعَارِجَ عَلَيۡهَا يَظۡهَرُونَ ٣٣And were it not that mankind would have become one community, We might well have appointed, for those who disbelieve in the Beneficent, roofs of silver for their houses and stairs (of silver) whereby to mount.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, were it not that it would push all people into disbelief, Allah would give the deniers worldly adornment in abundance; for it has no worth with Him.34وَلِبُيُوتِهِمۡ أَبۡوَٰبࣰا وَسُرُرًا عَلَيۡهَا يَتَّكِـُٔونَ ٣٤And for their houses doors (of silver) and couches of silver whereon to recline.35وَزُخۡرُفࣰاۚ وَإِن كُلُّ ذَٰلِكَ لَمَّا مَتَٰعُ ٱلۡحَيَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنۡيَاۚ وَٱلۡأٓخِرَةُ عِندَ رَبِّكَ لِلۡمُتَّقِينَ ٣٥And ornaments of gold. Yet all that would have been but a provision of the life of the world. And the Hereafter with your Lord would have been for those who keep from evil.InsightElmalılı explains “zukhruf” as gilded engravings and adornments: in truth they are nothing, only the deceptive goods of worldly life.36وَمَن يَعۡشُ عَن ذِكۡرِ ٱلرَّحۡمَٰنِ نُقَيِّضۡ لَهُۥ شَيۡطَٰنࣰا فَهُوَ لَهُۥ قَرِينࣱ ٣٦And he whose sight is dim to the remembrance of the Beneficent, We assign unto him a devil who becometh his comrade.InsightElmalılı explains “‘asha” as a weakness of the eye, the night-blindness; here it means turning a blind eye.37وَإِنَّهُمۡ لَيَصُدُّونَهُمۡ عَنِ ٱلسَّبِيلِ وَيَحۡسَبُونَ أَنَّهُم مُّهۡتَدُونَ ٣٧And lo! they surely turn them from the way of Allah, and yet they deem that they are rightly guided.38حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا جَآءَنَا قَالَ يَٰلَيۡتَ بَيۡنِي وَبَيۡنَكَ بُعۡدَ ٱلۡمَشۡرِقَيۡنِ فَبِئۡسَ ٱلۡقَرِينُ ٣٨Till, when he cometh unto Us, he saith (unto his comrade): Ah, would that between me and thee there were the distance of the two horizons - an evil comrade.39وَلَن يَنفَعَكُمُ ٱلۡيَوۡمَ إِذ ظَّلَمۡتُمۡ أَنَّكُمۡ فِي ٱلۡعَذَابِ مُشۡتَرِكُونَ ٣٩And it profiteth you not this day, because ye did wrong, that ye will be sharers in the doom.40أَفَأَنتَ تُسۡمِعُ ٱلصُّمَّ أَوۡ تَهۡدِي ٱلۡعُمۡيَ وَمَن كَانَ فِي ضَلَٰلࣲ مُّبِينࣲ ٤٠Canst thou (Muhammad) make the deaf to hear, or canst thou guide the blind or him who is in error manifest.41فَإِمَّا نَذۡهَبَنَّ بِكَ فَإِنَّا مِنۡهُم مُّنتَقِمُونَ ٤١And if We take thee away, We surely shall take vengeance on them.42أَوۡ نُرِيَنَّكَ ٱلَّذِي وَعَدۡنَٰهُمۡ فَإِنَّا عَلَيۡهِم مُّقۡتَدِرُونَ ٤٢Or (if) We show thee that wherewith We threaten them; for lo! We have complete command of them.43فَٱسۡتَمۡسِكۡ بِٱلَّذِيٓ أُوحِيَ إِلَيۡكَۖ إِنَّكَ عَلَىٰ صِرَٰطࣲ مُّسۡتَقِيمࣲ ٤٣So hold thou fast to that which is inspired in thee. Lo! thou art on a right path.44وَإِنَّهُۥ لَذِكۡرࣱ لَّكَ وَلِقَوۡمِكَۖ وَسَوۡفَ تُسۡـَٔلُونَ ٤٤And lo! it is in truth a Reminder for thee and for thy folk; and ye will be questioned.45وَسۡـَٔلۡ مَنۡ أَرۡسَلۡنَا مِن قَبۡلِكَ مِن رُّسُلِنَآ أَجَعَلۡنَا مِن دُونِ ٱلرَّحۡمَٰنِ ءَالِهَةࣰ يُعۡبَدُونَ ٤٥And ask those of Our messengers whom We sent before thee: Did We ever appoint gods to be worshipped beside the Beneficent.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, the aim is to cite the agreement of all prophets on tawhid as a witness.46وَلَقَدۡ أَرۡسَلۡنَا مُوسَىٰ بِـَٔايَٰتِنَآ إِلَىٰ فِرۡعَوۡنَ وَمَلَإِيْهِۦ فَقَالَ إِنِّي رَسُولُ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَٰلَمِينَ ٤٦And verily We sent Moses with Our revelations unto Pharaoh and his chiefs, and he said: I am a messenger of the Lord of the Worlds.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, there is a parallel in mentioning this story: as Quraysh failed to value the Prophet because he lacked wealth, Pharaoh too looked down on Moses.47فَلَمَّا جَآءَهُم بِـَٔايَٰتِنَآ إِذَا هُم مِّنۡهَا يَضۡحَكُونَ ٤٧But when he brought them Our tokens, behold! they laughed at them.48وَمَا نُرِيهِم مِّنۡ ءَايَةٍ إِلَّا هِيَ أَكۡبَرُ مِنۡ أُخۡتِهَاۖ وَأَخَذۡنَٰهُم بِٱلۡعَذَابِ لَعَلَّهُمۡ يَرۡجِعُونَ ٤٨And every token that We showed them was greater than its sister (token), and We grasped them with the torment, that haply they might turn again.49وَقَالُواْ يَـٰٓأَيُّهَ ٱلسَّاحِرُ ٱدۡعُ لَنَا رَبَّكَ بِمَا عَهِدَ عِندَكَ إِنَّنَا لَمُهۡتَدُونَ ٤٩And they said: O wizard! Entreat thy Lord for us by the pact that He hath made with thee. Lo! we verily will walk aright.50فَلَمَّا كَشَفۡنَا عَنۡهُمُ ٱلۡعَذَابَ إِذَا هُمۡ يَنكُثُونَ ٥٠But when We eased them of the torment, behold! they broke their word.51وَنَادَىٰ فِرۡعَوۡنُ فِي قَوۡمِهِۦ قَالَ يَٰقَوۡمِ أَلَيۡسَ لِي مُلۡكُ مِصۡرَ وَهَٰذِهِ ٱلۡأَنۡهَٰرُ تَجۡرِي مِن تَحۡتِيٓۚ أَفَلَا تُبۡصِرُونَ ٥١And Pharaoh caused a proclamation to be made among his people saying: O my people! Is not mine the sovereignty of Egypt and these rivers flowing under me? Can ye not then discern.52أَمۡ أَنَا۠ خَيۡرࣱ مِّنۡ هَٰذَا ٱلَّذِي هُوَ مَهِينࣱ وَلَا يَكَادُ يُبِينُ ٥٢I am surely better than this fellow, who is despicable and can hardly make (his meaning) plain.53فَلَوۡلَآ أُلۡقِيَ عَلَيۡهِ أَسۡوِرَةࣱ مِّن ذَهَبٍ أَوۡ جَآءَ مَعَهُ ٱلۡمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُ مُقۡتَرِنِينَ ٥٣Why, then, have armlets of gold not been set upon him, or angels sent along with him.54فَٱسۡتَخَفَّ قَوۡمَهُۥ فَأَطَاعُوهُۚ إِنَّهُمۡ كَانُواْ قَوۡمࣰا فَٰسِقِينَ ٥٤Thus he persuaded his people to make light (of Moses), and they obeyed him. Lo! they were a wanton folk.55فَلَمَّآ ءَاسَفُونَا ٱنتَقَمۡنَا مِنۡهُمۡ فَأَغۡرَقۡنَٰهُمۡ أَجۡمَعِينَ ٥٥So, when they angered Us, We punished them and drowned them every one.56فَجَعَلۡنَٰهُمۡ سَلَفࣰا وَمَثَلࣰا لِّلۡأٓخِرِينَ ٥٦And We made them a thing past, and an example for those after (them).57۞وَلَمَّا ضُرِبَ ٱبۡنُ مَرۡيَمَ مَثَلًا إِذَا قَوۡمُكَ مِنۡهُ يَصِدُّونَ ٥٧And when the son of Mary is quoted as an example, behold! the folk laugh out.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, this is the Christians’ calling Jesus a god and son of Allah being put forward as an objection.58وَقَالُوٓاْ ءَأَٰلِهَتُنَا خَيۡرٌ أَمۡ هُوَۚ مَا ضَرَبُوهُ لَكَ إِلَّا جَدَلَۢاۚ بَلۡ هُمۡ قَوۡمٌ خَصِمُونَ ٥٨And say: Are our gods better, or is he? They raise not the objection save for argument. Nay! but they are a contentious folk.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, they considered the angels Allah’s daughters and worshipped them; they raised the example not to seek truth but to argue.59إِنۡ هُوَ إِلَّا عَبۡدٌ أَنۡعَمۡنَا عَلَيۡهِ وَجَعَلۡنَٰهُ مَثَلࣰا لِّبَنِيٓ إِسۡرَـٰٓءِيلَ ٥٩He is nothing but a slave on whom We bestowed favour, and We made him a pattern for the Children of Israel.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, Jesus son of Mary is neither a god nor Allah’s son; he is a pure servant blessed with prophethood and messengership.60وَلَوۡ نَشَآءُ لَجَعَلۡنَا مِنكُم مَّلَـٰٓئِكَةࣰ فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِ يَخۡلُفُونَ ٦٠And had We willed We could have set among you angels to be viceroys in the earth.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, just as Jesus was born of Mary, We could have had angels born from you; that would not make them divine.61وَإِنَّهُۥ لَعِلۡمࣱ لِّلسَّاعَةِ فَلَا تَمۡتَرُنَّ بِهَا وَٱتَّبِعُونِۚ هَٰذَا صِرَٰطࣱ مُّسۡتَقِيمࣱ ٦١And lo! verily there is knowledge of the Hour. So doubt ye not concerning it, but follow Me. This is the right path.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, Jesus, through his birth and raising the dead, is a proof and sign that the Hour will come and the dead will rise.62وَلَا يَصُدَّنَّكُمُ ٱلشَّيۡطَٰنُۖ إِنَّهُۥ لَكُمۡ عَدُوࣱّ مُّبِينࣱ ٦٢And let not Satan turn you aside. Lo! he is an open enemy for you.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, though Satan is hidden, his enmity is plain; for he is the one who brought you out of Paradise.63وَلَمَّا جَآءَ عِيسَىٰ بِٱلۡبَيِّنَٰتِ قَالَ قَدۡ جِئۡتُكُم بِٱلۡحِكۡمَةِ وَلِأُبَيِّنَ لَكُم بَعۡضَ ٱلَّذِي تَخۡتَلِفُونَ فِيهِۖ فَٱتَّقُواْ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُونِ ٦٣When Jesus came with clear proofs (of Allah’s Sovereignty), he said: I have come unto you with wisdom, and to make plain some of that concerning which ye differ. So keep your duty to Allah, and obey me.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, Jesus came with clear miracles, prophethood and scripture, and clarified matters on which the Children of Israel differed.64إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ هُوَ رَبِّي وَرَبُّكُمۡ فَٱعۡبُدُوهُۚ هَٰذَا صِرَٰطࣱ مُّسۡتَقِيمࣱ ٦٤Lo! Allah, He is my Lord and your Lord. So worship Him. This is a right path.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, this is what Jesus said: recognise Him alone as worthy of worship; this is the one straight path.65فَٱخۡتَلَفَ ٱلۡأَحۡزَابُ مِنۢ بَيۡنِهِمۡۖ فَوَيۡلࣱ لِّلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُواْ مِنۡ عَذَابِ يَوۡمٍ أَلِيمٍ ٦٥But the factions among them differed. Then woe unto those who do wrong from the doom of a painful day.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, the Jews said one thing, and the Christians split into various sects.66هَلۡ يَنظُرُونَ إِلَّا ٱلسَّاعَةَ أَن تَأۡتِيَهُم بَغۡتَةࣰ وَهُمۡ لَا يَشۡعُرُونَ ٦٦Await they aught save the Hour, that it shall come upon them suddenly, when they know not.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, all those wrongdoers look only to the coming of that hour of punishment; but it will come suddenly, when they are unaware.67ٱلۡأَخِلَّآءُ يَوۡمَئِذِۭ بَعۡضُهُمۡ لِبَعۡضٍ عَدُوٌّ إِلَّا ٱلۡمُتَّقِينَ ٦٧Friends on that day will be foes one to another, save those who kept their duty (to Allah).68يَٰعِبَادِ لَا خَوۡفٌ عَلَيۡكُمُ ٱلۡيَوۡمَ وَلَآ أَنتُمۡ تَحۡزَنُونَ ٦٨O My slaves! For you there is no fear this day, nor is it ye who grieve.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, this is the divine address that day to the mindful who loved one another for Allah; the sweetness of this address is beyond satiety.69ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ بِـَٔايَٰتِنَا وَكَانُواْ مُسۡلِمِينَ ٦٩(Ye) who believed Our revelations and were self-surrendered.70ٱدۡخُلُواْ ٱلۡجَنَّةَ أَنتُمۡ وَأَزۡوَٰجُكُمۡ تُحۡبَرُونَ ٧٠Enter the Garden, ye and your wives, to be made glad.InsightElmalılı gives “tuhbarun” three meanings: joy will show on your faces, you will be beautifully adorned, or you will be honoured.71يُطَافُ عَلَيۡهِم بِصِحَافࣲ مِّن ذَهَبࣲ وَأَكۡوَابࣲۖ وَفِيهَا مَا تَشۡتَهِيهِ ٱلۡأَنفُسُ وَتَلَذُّ ٱلۡأَعۡيُنُۖ وَأَنتُمۡ فِيهَا خَٰلِدُونَ ٧١Therein are brought round for them trays of gold and goblets, and therein is all that souls desire and eyes find sweet. Let thy Lord make an end of us. He saith: Lo! here ye must remain.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, Malik is the name of the keeper of Hell; they wish to die to escape the torment, but they will remain.78لَقَدۡ جِئۡنَٰكُم بِٱلۡحَقِّ وَلَٰكِنَّ أَكۡثَرَكُمۡ لِلۡحَقِّ كَٰرِهُونَ ٧٨We verily brought the Truth unto you, but ye were, most of you, averse to the Truth.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, the truth here is the religion sent with the Prophet: tawhid and the Qur’an.79أَمۡ أَبۡرَمُوٓاْ أَمۡرࣰا فَإِنَّا مُبۡرِمُونَ ٧٩Or do they determine any thing (against the Prophet)? Lo! We (also) are determining.InsightElmalılı relates from Muqatil: this verse concerns the Meccan idolaters resolving at Dar an-Nadwah to plot against the Prophet.80أَمۡ يَحۡسَبُونَ أَنَّا لَا نَسۡمَعُ سِرَّهُمۡ وَنَجۡوَىٰهُمۚ بَلَىٰ وَرُسُلُنَا لَدَيۡهِمۡ يَكۡتُبُونَ ٨٠Or deem they that We cannot hear their secret thoughts and private confidences? Nay, but Our envoys, present with them, do record.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, these messengers are the guardian angels called the noble scribes.81قُلۡ إِن كَانَ لِلرَّحۡمَٰنِ وَلَدࣱ فَأَنَا۠ أَوَّلُ ٱلۡعَٰبِدِينَ ٨١Say (O Muhammad): If the Beneficent One hath a son, then, I shall be first among the worshippers. How then are they turned away.88وَقِيلِهِۦ يَٰرَبِّ إِنَّ هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ قَوۡمࣱ لَّا يُؤۡمِنُونَ ٨٨And he saith: O my Lord!
