1وَٱلنَّـٰزِعَٰتِ غَرۡقࣰا ١By those who drag forth to destruction.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, the surah opens with oaths by powers doing five things: extracting, drawing out gently, swimming, racing and directing affairs. The answer is left unstated: the Hour will come.2وَٱلنَّـٰشِطَٰتِ نَشۡطࣰا ٢By the meteors rushing.3وَٱلسَّـٰبِحَٰتِ سَبۡحࣰا ٣By the lone stars floating.4فَٱلسَّـٰبِقَٰتِ سَبۡقࣰا ٤By the angels hastening.5فَٱلۡمُدَبِّرَٰتِ أَمۡرࣰا ٥And those who govern the event.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, the answer to these oaths is understood from what follows: these things will happen; the Hour and the resurrection will surely come.6يَوۡمَ تَرۡجُفُ ٱلرَّاجِفَةُ ٦On the day when the first trump resoundeth.InsightElmalılı explains “rajf” as shaking violently: the Hour and the resurrection will happen on that day.7تَتۡبَعُهَا ٱلرَّادِفَةُ ٧And the second followeth it.InsightElmalılı explains “radifah” as what follows: in the first blast, the quakes coming one after another, the sky splitting and the stars scattering.8قُلُوبࣱ يَوۡمَئِذࣲ وَاجِفَةٌ ٨On that day hearts beat painfully.9أَبۡصَٰرُهَا خَٰشِعَةࣱ ٩While eyes are downcast.10يَقُولُونَ أَءِنَّا لَمَرۡدُودُونَ فِي ٱلۡحَافِرَةِ ١٠(Now) they are saying: Shall we really be restored to our first state.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, after the resurrection is announced with oaths, the words of those who deny it are related.11أَءِذَا كُنَّا عِظَٰمࣰا نَّخِرَةࣰ ١١Even after we are crumbled bones.InsightElmalılı explains “nakhirah” as rotten, crumbling bone, blown by the wind or hollow so it whistles in the wind. This is mockery following denial.12قَالُواْ تِلۡكَ إِذࣰا كَرَّةٌ خَاسِرَةࣱ ١٢They say: Then that would be a vain proceeding.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, they said this mockingly: “If so, since we did not believe or prepare, it would be a losing return.”13فَإِنَّمَا هِيَ زَجۡرَةࣱ وَٰحِدَةࣱ ١٣Surely it will need but one shout.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, do not think it hard for Allah; it is but a single mighty command, one cry.14فَإِذَا هُم بِٱلسَّاهِرَةِ ١٤And lo! they will be awakened.InsightElmalılı explains “sahirah” as the bare, open earth where mirages appear, an open field: with eyes opened, they will be on the plain of gathering.15هَلۡ أَتَىٰكَ حَدِيثُ مُوسَىٰٓ ١٥Hath there come unto thee the history of Moses.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, this story is told as a lesson about the fate of those who deny a prophet and as comfort for the Prophet.16إِذۡ نَادَىٰهُ رَبُّهُۥ بِٱلۡوَادِ ٱلۡمُقَدَّسِ طُوًى ١٦How his Lord called him in the holy vale of Tuwa.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, this is the sacred valley at the foot of Mount Sinai, where Allah called to Moses.17ٱذۡهَبۡ إِلَىٰ فِرۡعَوۡنَ إِنَّهُۥ طَغَىٰ ١٧(Saying:) Go thou unto Pharaoh - Lo! he hath rebelled.18فَقُلۡ هَل لَّكَ إِلَىٰٓ أَن تَزَكَّىٰ ١٨And say (unto him): Hast thou (will) to grow (in grace).InsightAccording to Elmalılı, this is a gentle invitation, even to Pharaoh: “Have you any wish, any intention for it?”19وَأَهۡدِيَكَ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ فَتَخۡشَىٰ ١٩Then I will guide thee to thy Lord and thou shalt fear (Him).InsightAccording to Elmalılı, this is guiding him to know his Lord; one who knows Him reveres Him, for awe comes with knowledge.20فَأَرَىٰهُ ٱلۡأٓيَةَ ٱلۡكُبۡرَىٰ ٢٠And he showed him the tremendous token.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, this is the staff coming alive as a serpent; a proof of the dead being raised and of the command “Be!”. One who would not heed words was shown a sign in deed.21فَكَذَّبَ وَعَصَىٰ ٢١But he denied and disobeyed.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, he not only rejected the word but called the great sign magic even after seeing it, accused Moses of lying, and refused Allah’s command.22ثُمَّ أَدۡبَرَ يَسۡعَىٰ ٢٢Then turned he away in haste.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, he did not stop; he ran and worked, but towards decline, not towards good.23فَحَشَرَ فَنَادَىٰ ٢٣Then gathered he and summoned.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, he first gathered the magicians, and when they were defeated he sent men to the cities to gather the people.24فَقَالَ أَنَا۠ رَبُّكُمُ ٱلۡأَعۡلَىٰ ٢٤And proclaimed: “I (Pharaoh) am your Lord the Highest.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, he went so far as to claim to be the supreme lord, counting every other lord beneath him.25فَأَخَذَهُ ٱللَّهُ نَكَالَ ٱلۡأٓخِرَةِ وَٱلۡأُولَىٰٓ ٢٥So Allah seized him (and made him) an example for the after (life) and for the former.InsightElmalılı explains “nakal” as an exemplary punishment, a lesson for those who see and hear.26إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَعِبۡرَةࣰ لِّمَن يَخۡشَىٰٓ ٢٦Lo! herein is indeed a lesson for him who feareth.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, there is an awakening lesson in this story; but not for everyone, only for those who revere Allah.27ءَأَنتُمۡ أَشَدُّ خَلۡقًا أَمِ ٱلسَّمَآءُۚ بَنَىٰهَا ٢٧Are ye the harder to create, or is the heaven that He built.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, this is a question to those who think themselves great and deny Allah’s power: is it harder to recreate you, or to create that sky?28رَفَعَ سَمۡكَهَا فَسَوَّىٰهَا ٢٨He raised the height thereof and ordered it.InsightElmalılı explains “samk” as a thing’s height from bottom to top: Allah raised the sky high without pillars.29وَأَغۡطَشَ لَيۡلَهَا وَأَخۡرَجَ ضُحَىٰهَا ٢٩And He made dark the night thereof, and He brought forth the morn thereof.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, the night is linked to the sky because night and day come from the movement of the sun in the sky.30وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ بَعۡدَ ذَٰلِكَ دَحَىٰهَآ ٣٠And after that He spread the earth.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, after creating and ordering the sky, Allah spread the earth so that life and settlement would be possible on it.31أَخۡرَجَ مِنۡهَا مَآءَهَا وَمَرۡعَىٰهَا ٣١And produced therefrom the water thereof and the pasture thereof.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, Allah created its water, made its springs gush and its rivers flow, and brought forth its grass, pasture and fields.32وَٱلۡجِبَالَ أَرۡسَىٰهَا ٣٢And He made fast the hills.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, spreading the earth means arranging its crust to be fit for life and settlement; the mountains are part of this.33مَتَٰعࣰا لَّكُمۡ وَلِأَنۡعَٰمِكُمۡ ٣٣A provision for you and for your cattle.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, this great work of power is not without wisdom; these things were not created aimlessly, by chance.34فَإِذَا جَآءَتِ ٱلطَّآمَّةُ ٱلۡكُبۡرَىٰ ٣٤But when the great disaster cometh.InsightElmalılı explains “at-tammah” as an irresistible, overwhelming calamity; “at-tammah al-kubra” is one of the names of the Hour.35يَوۡمَ يَتَذَكَّرُ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ مَا سَعَىٰ ٣٥The day when man will call to mind his (whole) endeavour.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, that day man will understand what he worked for, which hope he chased, whether he strove for good or evil, gain or loss.36وَبُرِّزَتِ ٱلۡجَحِيمُ لِمَن يَرَىٰ ٣٦And hell will stand forth visible to him who seeth.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, the doors of Hell will be opened and that fire brought plainly into view; everyone who sees will see it.37فَأَمَّا مَن طَغَىٰ ٣٧Then, as for him who rebelled.38وَءَاثَرَ ٱلۡحَيَوٰةَ ٱلدُّنۡيَا ٣٨And chose the life of the world.39فَإِنَّ ٱلۡجَحِيمَ هِيَ ٱلۡمَأۡوَىٰ ٣٩Lo! hell will be his home.40وَأَمَّا مَنۡ خَافَ مَقَامَ رَبِّهِۦ وَنَهَى ٱلنَّفۡسَ عَنِ ٱلۡهَوَىٰ ٤٠But as for him who feared to stand before his Lord and restrained his soul from lust.InsightElmalılı explains “the standing of his Lord” as the place where the servant will stand before Allah on that great day, when the Spirit and the angels stand in rows.41فَإِنَّ ٱلۡجَنَّةَ هِيَ ٱلۡمَأۡوَىٰ ٤١Lo! the Garden will be his home.42يَسۡـَٔلُونَكَ عَنِ ٱلسَّاعَةِ أَيَّانَ مُرۡسَىٰهَا ٤٢They ask thee of the Hour: when will it come to port.InsightElmalılı explains “mursa” as the time a thing arrives and settles, like where a ship drops anchor and stops.43فِيمَ أَنتَ مِن ذِكۡرَىٰهَآ ٤٣Why (ask they)? What hast thou to tell thereof.InsightElmalılı gives two meanings: telling its time is not your duty; or you yourself are one of the signs of the Hour.44إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ مُنتَهَىٰهَآ ٤٤Unto thy Lord belongeth (knowledge of) the term thereof.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, knowing the Hour in its full essence and detail belongs to the Lord alone; no one but He knows it.45إِنَّمَآ أَنتَ مُنذِرُ مَن يَخۡشَىٰهَا ٤٥Thou art but a warner unto him who feareth it.46كَأَنَّهُمۡ يَوۡمَ يَرَوۡنَهَا لَمۡ يَلۡبَثُوٓاْ إِلَّا عَشِيَّةً أَوۡ ضُحَىٰهَا ٤٦On the day when they behold it, it will be as if they had but tarried for an evening or the morn thereof.
