Surah Nuh
Noah · Surah 71 · Meccan · 28 verses
Lo! We sent Noah unto his people (saying): Warn thy people ere the painful doom come unto them.InsightElmalılı relates from al-Alusi: the name Noah is not originally Arabic; it has been said to mean “calm” in Syriac.2قَالَ يَٰقَوۡمِ إِنِّي لَكُمۡ نَذِيرࣱ مُّبِينٌ ٢He said: O my people! Lo! I am a plain warner unto you.3أَنِ ٱعۡبُدُواْ ٱللَّهَ وَٱتَّقُوهُ وَأَطِيعُونِ ٣(Bidding you): Serve Allah and keep your duty unto Him and obey me.4يَغۡفِرۡ لَكُم مِّن ذُنُوبِكُمۡ وَيُؤَخِّرۡكُمۡ إِلَىٰٓ أَجَلࣲ مُّسَمًّىۚ إِنَّ أَجَلَ ٱللَّهِ إِذَا جَآءَ لَا يُؤَخَّرُۚ لَوۡ كُنتُمۡ تَعۡلَمُونَ ٤That He may forgive you somewhat of your sins and respite you to an appointed term. Lo! the term of Allah, when it cometh, cannot be delayed, if ye but knew.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, the sins forgiven are past sins, for Islam erases what came before; or sins concerning Allah’s rights rather than people’s rights.5قَالَ رَبِّ إِنِّي دَعَوۡتُ قَوۡمِي لَيۡلࣰا وَنَهَارࣰا ٥He said: My Lord! Lo! I have called unto my people night and day.6فَلَمۡ يَزِدۡهُمۡ دُعَآءِيٓ إِلَّا فِرَارࣰا ٦But all my calling doth but add to their repugnance.7وَإِنِّي كُلَّمَا دَعَوۡتُهُمۡ لِتَغۡفِرَ لَهُمۡ جَعَلُوٓاْ أَصَٰبِعَهُمۡ فِيٓ ءَاذَانِهِمۡ وَٱسۡتَغۡشَوۡاْ ثِيَابَهُمۡ وَأَصَرُّواْ وَٱسۡتَكۡبَرُواْ ٱسۡتِكۡبَارࣰا ٧And lo! whenever I call unto them that Thou mayst pardon them they thrust their fingers in their ears and cover themselves with their garments and persist (in their refusal) and magnify themselves in pride.8ثُمَّ إِنِّي دَعَوۡتُهُمۡ جِهَارࣰا ٨And lo! I have called unto them aloud.9ثُمَّ إِنِّيٓ أَعۡلَنتُ لَهُمۡ وَأَسۡرَرۡتُ لَهُمۡ إِسۡرَارࣰا ٩And lo! I have made public proclamation unto them, and I have appealed to them in private.10فَقُلۡتُ ٱسۡتَغۡفِرُواْ رَبَّكُمۡ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ غَفَّارࣰا ١٠And I have said: Seek pardon of your Lord. Lo! He was ever Forgiving.11يُرۡسِلِ ٱلسَّمَآءَ عَلَيۡكُم مِّدۡرَارࣰا ١١He will let loose the sky for you in plenteous rain.12وَيُمۡدِدۡكُم بِأَمۡوَٰلࣲ وَبَنِينَ وَيَجۡعَل لَّكُمۡ جَنَّـٰتࣲ وَيَجۡعَل لَّكُمۡ أَنۡهَٰرࣰا ١٢And will help you with wealth and sons, and will assign unto you Gardens and will assign unto you rivers.13مَّا لَكُمۡ لَا تَرۡجُونَ لِلَّهِ وَقَارࣰا ١٣What aileth you that ye hope not toward Allah for dignity.InsightElmalılı explains “waqar” as the opposite of lightness: weight, forbearance, composure and majesty. Why do you not expect His majesty and revere Him?14وَقَدۡ خَلَقَكُمۡ أَطۡوَارًا ١٤When He created you by (divers) stages.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, this points to the stages of development human creation has passed through, both individually and collectively.15أَلَمۡ تَرَوۡاْ كَيۡفَ خَلَقَ ٱللَّهُ سَبۡعَ سَمَٰوَٰتࣲ طِبَاقࣰا ١٥See ye not how Allah hath created seven heavens in harmony.16وَجَعَلَ ٱلۡقَمَرَ فِيهِنَّ نُورࣰا وَجَعَلَ ٱلشَّمۡسَ سِرَاجࣰا ١٦And hath made the moon a light therein, and made the sun a lamp.17وَٱللَّهُ أَنۢبَتَكُم مِّنَ ٱلۡأَرۡضِ نَبَاتࣰا ١٧And Allah hath caused you to grow as a growth from the earth.InsightElmalılı explains “nabat” as everything that sprouts and grows from the earth: man too was made to grow from the soil like a plant.18ثُمَّ يُعِيدُكُمۡ فِيهَا وَيُخۡرِجُكُمۡ إِخۡرَاجࣰا ١٨And afterward He maketh you return thereto, and He will bring you forth again, a (new) forthbringing.19وَٱللَّهُ جَعَلَ لَكُمُ ٱلۡأَرۡضَ بِسَاطࣰا ١٩And Allah hath made the earth a wide expanse for you.20لِّتَسۡلُكُواْ مِنۡهَا سُبُلࣰا فِجَاجࣰا ٢٠That ye may thread the valley-ways thereof.21قَالَ نُوحࣱ رَّبِّ إِنَّهُمۡ عَصَوۡنِي وَٱتَّبَعُواْ مَن لَّمۡ يَزِدۡهُ مَالُهُۥ وَوَلَدُهُۥٓ إِلَّا خَسَارࣰا ٢١Noah said: My Lord! Lo! they have disobeyed me and followed one whose wealth and children increase him in naught save ruin.22وَمَكَرُواْ مَكۡرࣰا كُبَّارࣰا ٢٢And they have plotted a mighty plot.23وَقَالُواْ لَا تَذَرُنَّ ءَالِهَتَكُمۡ وَلَا تَذَرُنَّ وَدࣰّا وَلَا سُوَاعࣰا وَلَا يَغُوثَ وَيَعُوقَ وَنَسۡرࣰا ٢٣And they have said: Forsake not your gods. Forsake not Wadd, nor Suwa’, nor Yaghuth and Ya’uq and Nasr.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, these were the names of the idols they held greatest; differences of rank among them are hinted at by repeating or omitting the word “la”.24وَقَدۡ أَضَلُّواْ كَثِيرࣰاۖ وَلَا تَزِدِ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ إِلَّا ضَلَٰلࣰا ٢٤And they have led many astray, and Thou increasest the wrong-doers in naught save error.25مِّمَّا خَطِيٓـَٰٔتِهِمۡ أُغۡرِقُواْ فَأُدۡخِلُواْ نَارࣰا فَلَمۡ يَجِدُواْ لَهُم مِّن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ أَنصَارࣰا ٢٥Because of their sins they were drowned, then made to enter a Fire. And they found they had no helpers in place of Allah.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, placing the cause first conveys that they were destroyed for no other reason than their sins and the greatness of their crimes.26وَقَالَ نُوحࣱ رَّبِّ لَا تَذَرۡ عَلَى ٱلۡأَرۡضِ مِنَ ٱلۡكَٰفِرِينَ دَيَّارًا ٢٦And Noah said: My Lord! Leave not one of the disbelievers in the land.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, this explains that they deserved destruction; Noah’s prayer, too, was because of their sins.27إِنَّكَ إِن تَذَرۡهُمۡ يُضِلُّواْ عِبَادَكَ وَلَا يَلِدُوٓاْ إِلَّا فَاجِرࣰا كَفَّارࣰا ٢٧If Thou shouldst leave them, they will mislead Thy slaves and will beget none save lewd ingrates.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, the effect of this prayer was not only the drowning of Noah’s people; a new line of humanity continued from him and the believers with him.28رَّبِّ ٱغۡفِرۡ لِي وَلِوَٰلِدَيَّ وَلِمَن دَخَلَ بَيۡتِيَ مُؤۡمِنࣰا وَلِلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ وَٱلۡمُؤۡمِنَٰتِۖ وَلَا تَزِدِ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ إِلَّا تَبَارَۢا ٢٨My Lord! Forgive me and my parents and him who entereth my house believing, and believing men and believing women, and increase not the wrong-doers in aught save ruin.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, this prayer covers the believing men and women of all communities, past and to come until the Resurrection.
