Surah Al-Inshiqaq
The Sundering · Surah 84 · Meccan · 25 verses
1إِذَا ٱلسَّمَآءُ ٱنشَقَّتۡ ١When the heaven is split asunder.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, the splitting of the sky is the divine command from above appearing in the sky for the change of this world.2وَأَذِنَتۡ لِرَبِّهَا وَحُقَّتۡ ٢And attentive to her Lord in fear.InsightElmalılı explains “adhinat” as lending an ear, listening; it is an image for submitting and obeying, like “heeding” in English.3وَإِذَا ٱلۡأَرۡضُ مُدَّتۡ ٣And when the earth is spread out.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, its mountains and valleys will be levelled and the earth stretched and widened.4وَأَلۡقَتۡ مَا فِيهَا وَتَخَلَّتۡ ٤And hath cast out all that was in her, and is empty.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, the earth will throw the dead out of their graves and pour out its burdens, treasures and minerals.5وَأَذِنَتۡ لِرَبِّهَا وَحُقَّتۡ ٥And attentive to her Lord in fear.InsightElmalılı says this repetition distinguishes what concerns the sky from what concerns the earth: two stages of the Hour.6يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ إِنَّكَ كَادِحٌ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ كَدۡحࣰا فَمُلَٰقِيهِ ٦Thou, verily, O man, art working toward thy Lord a work which thou wilt meet (in His presence).InsightElmalılı explains “kadh” as putting effort into a task and striving with all one’s strength. Good or bad, man is always travelling towards his Lord.7فَأَمَّا مَنۡ أُوتِيَ كِتَٰبَهُۥ بِيَمِينِهِۦ ٧Then whoso is given his account in his right hand.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, this is one given his record of deeds in his right hand, as also described in Surah al-Haqqah.8فَسَوۡفَ يُحَاسَبُ حِسَابࣰا يَسِيرࣰا ٨He truly will receive an easy reckoning.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, this is an easy reckoning without dispute. In a hadith in al-Bukhari, the Prophet explained it as the record merely being looked at and passed.9وَيَنقَلِبُ إِلَىٰٓ أَهۡلِهِۦ مَسۡرُورࣰا ٩And will return unto his folk in joy.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, his people are his believing friends and relatives and those Allah prepared for him in Paradise.10وَأَمَّا مَنۡ أُوتِيَ كِتَٰبَهُۥ وَرَآءَ ظَهۡرِهِۦ ١٠But whoso is given his account behind his back.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, “left” in Surah al-Haqqah and “behind” here mean the same: wrongness and ill omen.11فَسَوۡفَ يَدۡعُواْ ثُبُورࣰا ١١He surely will invoke destruction.InsightElmalılı explains “thubur” as destruction: he cries, “O destruction, where are you? Come, let me perish and be rid of this agony!”12وَيَصۡلَىٰ سَعِيرًا ١٢And be thrown to scorching fire.13إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ فِيٓ أَهۡلِهِۦ مَسۡرُورًا ١٣He verily lived joyous with his folk.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, in this world he was at ease at home and among his people, in pleasure and comfort; he never thought of the Hereafter and had no pity for the grieving.14إِنَّهُۥ ظَنَّ أَن لَّن يَحُورَ ١٤He verily deemed that he would never return (unto Allah).InsightAccording to Elmalılı, he thought his joy would never turn to sorrow, that he would not die, that he would bear no responsibility.15بَلَىٰٓۚ إِنَّ رَبَّهُۥ كَانَ بِهِۦ بَصِيرࣰا ١٥Nay, but lo! his Lord is ever looking on him.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, it was not as he thought; his Lord was seeing and watching all he did and would not let him slip away.16فَلَآ أُقۡسِمُ بِٱلشَّفَقِ ١٦Oh, I swear by the afterglow of sunset.InsightElmalılı explains “shafaq” as the red glow on the horizon after sunset; the word originally has the sense of thinness.17وَٱلَّيۡلِ وَمَا وَسَقَ ١٧And by the night and all that it enshroudeth.InsightElmalılı explains “wasaq” as gathering and collecting: the night gathers into itself all that scattered during the day.18وَٱلۡقَمَرِ إِذَا ٱتَّسَقَ ١٨And by the moon when she is at the full.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, this is when the moon gathers and becomes a perfect full moon.19لَتَرۡكَبُنَّ طَبَقًا عَن طَبَقࣲ ١٩That ye shall journey on from plane to plane.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, like the changes of twilight, night and moon, man will pass from state to state, stage to stage, until he reaches the Hereafter.20فَمَا لَهُمۡ لَا يُؤۡمِنُونَ ٢٠What aileth them, then, that they believe not.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, since change in this world is certain and going to the Hereafter and giving account is unavoidable, not believing is astonishing.21وَإِذَا قُرِئَ عَلَيۡهِمُ ٱلۡقُرۡءَانُ لَا يَسۡجُدُونَۤ۩ ٢١And, when the Qur’an is recited unto them, worship not (Allah).InsightAccording to Elmalılı, they do not submit, do not accept the truth, and do not obey its commands and prohibitions. This is a verse of prostration.22بَلِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ يُكَذِّبُونَ ٢٢Nay, but those who disbelieve will deny.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, they call the Qur’an and the Hereafter lies.23وَٱللَّهُ أَعۡلَمُ بِمَا يُوعُونَ ٢٣And Allah knoweth best what they are hiding.InsightElmalılı explains “yu‘un” as filling a vessel and storing it: Allah knows what they store in their hearts as they deny.24فَبَشِّرۡهُم بِعَذَابٍ أَلِيمٍ ٢٤So give them tidings of a painful doom.25إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَعَمِلُواْ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَٰتِ لَهُمۡ أَجۡرٌ غَيۡرُ مَمۡنُونِۭ ٢٥Save those who believe and do good works, for theirs is a reward unfailing.
