1سَبِّحِ ٱسۡمَ رَبِّكَ ٱلۡأَعۡلَى ۝١Praise the name of thy Lord the Most High.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, just as your Lord who nurtures you is above all things in His essence, His attributes and names are above all attributes and names.2ٱلَّذِي خَلَقَ فَسَوَّىٰ ۝٢Who createth, then disposeth.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, He is the Creator of all things. The Creator is surely higher and greater than the created.3وَٱلَّذِي قَدَّرَ فَهَدَىٰ ۝٣Who measureth, then guideth.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, Allah set a measure for everything He created through His knowledge and will: in its kind, qualities, actions and term. Then He showed each its way.4وَٱلَّذِيٓ أَخۡرَجَ ٱلۡمَرۡعَىٰ ۝٤Who bringeth forth the pasturage.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, this is the varied plant life of meadows, fields, gardens and forests, for people and animals to benefit from.5فَجَعَلَهُۥ غُثَآءً أَحۡوَىٰ ۝٥Then turneth it to russet stubble.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, green pasture ends up as manure and coal. This also hints at how passing the bodily pleasures of the world are.6سَنُقۡرِئُكَ فَلَا تَنسَىٰٓ ۝٦We shall make thee read (O Muhammad) so that thou shalt not forget.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, the Prophet, who did not know what a book or reading was, would receive the Qur’an through Gabriel as a book to recite, and he would not forget it.7إِلَّا مَا شَآءَ ٱللَّهُۚ إِنَّهُۥ يَعۡلَمُ ٱلۡجَهۡرَ وَمَا يَخۡفَىٰ ۝٧Save that which Allah willeth. Lo! He knoweth the disclosed and that which still is hidden.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, the promise not to forget does not mean Allah would no longer have the power to make him forget. Nothing can make Him powerless.8وَنُيَسِّرُكَ لِلۡيُسۡرَىٰ ۝٨And We shall ease thy way unto the state of ease.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, Allah would bring the Prophet to the easiest path and aim in everything, making this a firm trait he could carry out easily.9فَذَكِّرۡ إِن نَّفَعَتِ ٱلذِّكۡرَىٰ ۝٩Therefor remind (men), for of use is the reminder.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, a reminder benefits more or less, even if not everyone; so teach and remind people of the Qur’an’s teachings.10سَيَذَّكَّرُ مَن يَخۡشَىٰ ۝١٠He will heed who feareth.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, one who has reverence listens, takes advice and reflects.11وَيَتَجَنَّبُهَا ٱلۡأَشۡقَى ۝١١But the most hapless will flout it.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, the wretched one who avoids the reminder will enter the everlasting fire of Hell in the Hereafter.12ٱلَّذِي يَصۡلَى ٱلنَّارَ ٱلۡكُبۡرَىٰ ۝١٢He who will be flung to the great Fire.13ثُمَّ لَا يَمُوتُ فِيهَا وَلَا يَحۡيَىٰ ۝١٣Wherein he will neither die nor live.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, he will not die and so escape the punishment, nor find a life with any joy that would help him bear it.14قَدۡ أَفۡلَحَ مَن تَزَكَّىٰ ۝١٤He is successful who groweth.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, this is one who listens to the reminder and cleans his heart of idolatry and bad character, and his body of physical and spiritual impurity.15وَذَكَرَ ٱسۡمَ رَبِّهِۦ فَصَلَّىٰ ۝١٥And remembereth the name of his Lord, so prayeth.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, this is one who says “Allahu akbar” and prays, thinking he is coming before Allah; one report includes the Eid prayer.16بَلۡ تُؤۡثِرُونَ ٱلۡحَيَوٰةَ ٱلدُّنۡيَا ۝١٦But ye prefer the life of the world.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, heedless people, instead of preferring success above all and striving to purify themselves, choose the world’s adornments, amusements and pleasures.17وَٱلۡأٓخِرَةُ خَيۡرࣱ وَأَبۡقَىٰٓ ۝١٧Although the Hereafter is better and more lasting.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, however pleasant the passing life of this world may be, people of reason should prefer the Hereafter and strive to purify themselves.18إِنَّ هَٰذَا لَفِي ٱلصُّحُفِ ٱلۡأُولَىٰ ۝١٨Lo! This is in the former scrolls.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, the reminder that the Hereafter is better and more lasting than this world was also in the scriptures before the Qur’an.19صُحُفِ إِبۡرَٰهِيمَ وَمُوسَىٰ ۝١٩The Books of Abraham and Moses.InsightElmalılı says “suhuf” means pages and recalls that the Torah, Psalms, Gospel and Qur’an are the four great books.
