Surah Al-Infitar

The Cleaving · Surah 82 · Meccan · 19 verses

1إِذَا ٱلسَّمَآءُ ٱنفَطَرَتۡ ۝١When the heaven is cleft asunder.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, this splitting is the beginning of the change of the world’s order; as other surahs say, the sky opens for the angels to descend.2وَإِذَا ٱلۡكَوَاكِبُ ٱنتَثَرَتۡ ۝٢When the planets are dispersed.InsightElmalılı explains “intithar” as something strung together coming loose and scattering; the stars falling will come with the breakdown of the balance of gravitation.3وَإِذَا ٱلۡبِحَارُ فُجِّرَتۡ ۝٣When the seas are poured forth.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, this may be the barriers between seas tearing so they become one sea, or their waters drawing away.4وَإِذَا ٱلۡقُبُورُ بُعۡثِرَتۡ ۝٤And the sepulchres are overturned.InsightElmalılı explains “bu‘thirat” as digging up the soil and turning it upside down; it also expresses the dead being brought out.5عَلِمَتۡ نَفۡسࣱ مَّا قَدَّمَتۡ وَأَخَّرَتۡ ۝٥A soul will know what it hath sent before (it) and what left behind.InsightElmalılı gives several meanings: deeds done and left undone, or done earlier and later, or the good and bad traces left behind.6يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ مَا غَرَّكَ بِرَبِّكَ ٱلۡكَرِيمِ ۝٦O man! What hath made thee careless concerning thy Lord, the Bountiful.InsightElmalılı relates reports that this verse came down about certain disbelievers. The question rebukes being deceived by the Lord’s generosity into defying Him.7ٱلَّذِي خَلَقَكَ فَسَوَّىٰكَ فَعَدَلَكَ ۝٧Who created thee, then fashioned, then proportioned thee.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, the basis of every blessing is existence, then order and balance. It is He who brought man from nothing and gave him the fittest balance.8فِيٓ أَيِّ صُورَةࣲ مَّا شَآءَ رَكَّبَكَ ۝٨Into whatsoever form He will, He casteth thee.InsightElmalılı offers several explanations; the common meaning is that Allah gave each person a particular form and shape as He willed.9كَلَّا بَلۡ تُكَذِّبُونَ بِٱلدِّينِ ۝٩Nay, but ye deny the Judgment.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, this warns against being deceived by Allah’s generosity: you do not value it, and you deny His commands and the day of recompense.10وَإِنَّ عَلَيۡكُمۡ لَحَٰفِظِينَ ۝١٠Lo! there are above you guardians.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, there are guarding powers, watching angels called “hafazah”, charged with observing and recording everything done, good and bad.11كِرَامࣰا كَٰتِبِينَ ۝١١Generous and recording.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, each is honoured with Allah, never failing in duty, honest scribes of the truth.12يَعۡلَمُونَ مَا تَفۡعَلُونَ ۝١٢Who know (all) that ye do.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, they write everything, good and bad, knowingly into the record of deeds without losing any of it, and bear witness to it.13إِنَّ ٱلۡأَبۡرَارَ لَفِي نَعِيمࣲ ۝١٣Lo! the righteous verily will be in delight.InsightElmalılı explains “al-abrar” as the good, truthful in word and deed, people of goodness.14وَإِنَّ ٱلۡفُجَّارَ لَفِي جَحِيمࣲ ۝١٤And lo! the wicked verily will be in hell.InsightElmalılı explains “al-fujjar” as those who show disrespect to their Lord and fall into excessive rebellion.15يَصۡلَوۡنَهَا يَوۡمَ ٱلدِّينِ ۝١٥They will burn therein on the Day of Judgment.16وَمَا هُمۡ عَنۡهَا بِغَآئِبِينَ ۝١٦And will not be absent thence.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, the outcome of creation, knowledge, recording and guarding is to separate the righteous for bliss and the wicked for the fire.17وَمَآ أَدۡرَىٰكَ مَا يَوۡمُ ٱلدِّينِ ۝١٧Ah, what will convey unto thee what the Day of Judgment is.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, that day cannot be compared with any day of reckoning in this world; so man cannot know it by reasoning.18ثُمَّ مَآ أَدۡرَىٰكَ مَا يَوۡمُ ٱلدِّينِ ۝١٨Again, what will convey unto thee what the Day of Judgment is.19يَوۡمَ لَا تَمۡلِكُ نَفۡسࣱ لِّنَفۡسࣲ شَيۡـࣰٔاۖ وَٱلۡأَمۡرُ يَوۡمَئِذࣲ لِّلَّهِ ۝١٩A day on which no soul hath power at all for any (other) soul. The (absolute) command on that day is Allah’s.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, that day no one, believer or disbeliever, good or bad, can do the least thing on another’s behalf.
