Surah Al-’Adiyat

1وَٱلۡعَٰدِيَٰتِ ضَبۡحࣰا ١By the snorting courses.InsightElmalılı says “al-‘adiyat” comes from running fast and can be used for horses, camels and anything that runs.2فَٱلۡمُورِيَٰتِ قَدۡحࣰا ٢Striking sparks of fire.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, this is horses striking stones with their hooves as they run, making sparks. It points both to their strength and to their running by night.3فَٱلۡمُغِيرَٰتِ صُبۡحࣰا ٣And scouring to the raid at dawn.InsightElmalılı says “al-mughirat” means going swiftly and raiding. Some also understood it as pilgrims hurrying to Mina in the morning.4فَأَثَرۡنَ بِهِۦ نَقۡعࣰا ٤Then, therewith, with their trail of dust.InsightElmalılı notes the change of verb form here: the cloud of dust that results from the running brings the scene to life before our eyes.5فَوَسَطۡنَ بِهِۦ جَمۡعًا ٥Cleaving, as one, the centre (of the foe).InsightAccording to Elmalılı, these are forces that strike an enemy army right in its centre and scatter it. All these oaths stress the truth that follows.6إِنَّ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنَ لِرَبِّهِۦ لَكَنُودࣱ ٦Lo! man is an ingrate unto his Lord.InsightElmalılı explains “kanud”: one who does not recognise the right of a blessing or give thanks; who ignores the blessings he sees and keeps complaining only about his troubles.7وَإِنَّهُۥ عَلَىٰ ذَٰلِكَ لَشَهِيدࣱ ٧And lo! he is a witness unto that.InsightElmalılı gives two meanings: Allah is witness to his ingratitude, or the person himself bears witness to it through his own conduct. Since the subject is man, the second is strong too.8وَإِنَّهُۥ لِحُبِّ ٱلۡخَيۡرِ لَشَدِيدٌ ٨And lo! in the love of wealth he is violent.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, the Qur’an often calls wealth “khayr” (good), because human nature inclines to it. But excessive love of wealth makes a person stingy and hard.9۞أَفَلَا يَعۡلَمُ إِذَا بُعۡثِرَ مَا فِي ٱلۡقُبُورِ ٩Knoweth he not that, when the contents of the graves are poured forth.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, this is a warning that recalls the outcome: whoever is stingy and ungrateful out of greed for wealth, even if he does not see the harm today, will one day understand and face the result.10وَحُصِّلَ مَا فِي ٱلصُّدُورِ ١٠And the secrets of the breasts are made known.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, on that day all secrets, intentions and aims hidden in hearts will be gathered and laid out like a ripe harvest.11إِنَّ رَبَّهُم بِهِمۡ يَوۡمَئِذࣲ لَّخَبِيرُۢ ١١On that day will their Lord be perfectly informed concerning them.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, Allah knows people inside and out, before and after; He is unaware of no particle. On that day He will make everything known to them, even what they forgot.
