1حمٓ ١Ha. Mim.2وَٱلۡكِتَٰبِ ٱلۡمُبِينِ ٢By the Scripture that maketh plain.InsightElmalılı explains “mubin” as beautiful in expression and brilliant in clarity; the Book here is the Qur’an.3إِنَّآ أَنزَلۡنَٰهُ فِي لَيۡلَةࣲ مُّبَٰرَكَةٍۚ إِنَّا كُنَّا مُنذِرِينَ ٣Lo! We revealed it on a blessed night - Lo! We are ever warning.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, most commentators say this blessed night is Laylat al-Qadr; some said it is the night of mid-Sha‘ban.4فِيهَا يُفۡرَقُ كُلُّ أَمۡرٍ حَكِيمٍ ٤Whereon every wise command is made clear.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, every wise and important matter is set apart, arranged and distributed on that night.5أَمۡرࣰا مِّنۡ عِندِنَآۚ إِنَّا كُنَّا مُرۡسِلِينَ ٥As a command from Our presence - Lo! We are ever sending.6رَحۡمَةࣰ مِّن رَّبِّكَۚ إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلسَّمِيعُ ٱلۡعَلِيمُ ٦A mercy from thy Lord. Lo! He, even He is the Hearer, the Knower.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, Muhammad’s mission is a mercy to the worlds; the warning too is part of this mercy.7رَبِّ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَمَا بَيۡنَهُمَآۖ إِن كُنتُم مُّوقِنِينَ ٧Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if ye would be sure.8لَآ إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ يُحۡيِۦ وَيُمِيتُۖ رَبُّكُمۡ وَرَبُّ ءَابَآئِكُمُ ٱلۡأَوَّلِينَ ٨There is no Allah save Him. He quickeneth and giveth death; your Lord and Lord of your forefathers.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, you witness this: He is your Lord and your forefathers’ Lord; He caused your forefathers to die and now gives you life.9بَلۡ هُمۡ فِي شَكࣲّ يَلۡعَبُونَ ٩Nay, but they play in doubt.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, they lack certainty; even when they say “Allah” it is not with seriousness and understanding but in play.10فَٱرۡتَقِبۡ يَوۡمَ تَأۡتِي ٱلسَّمَآءُ بِدُخَانࣲ مُّبِينࣲ ١٠But watch thou (O Muhammad) for the day when the sky will produce visible smoke.11يَغۡشَى ٱلنَّاسَۖ هَٰذَا عَذَابٌ أَلِيمࣱ ١١That will envelop the people. This will be a painful torment.InsightElmalılı relates two interpretations: by Ibn Mas‘ud, the smoke seen by the hungry during a severe famine; by ‘Ali, a smoke that will come before the Hour.12رَّبَّنَا ٱكۡشِفۡ عَنَّا ٱلۡعَذَابَ إِنَّا مُؤۡمِنُونَ ١٢(Then they will say): Our Lord relieve us of the torment. Lo! we are believers.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, this means: “If You remove it, we will believe.”13أَنَّىٰ لَهُمُ ٱلذِّكۡرَىٰ وَقَدۡ جَآءَهُمۡ رَسُولࣱ مُّبِينࣱ ١٣How can there be remembrance for them, when a messenger making plain (the Truth) had already come unto them.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, though a messenger came explaining everything with clear signs and miracles, they are far from taking heed.14ثُمَّ تَوَلَّوۡاْ عَنۡهُ وَقَالُواْ مُعَلَّمࣱ مَّجۡنُونٌ ١٤And they had turned away from him and said: One taught (by others), a madman.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, at times they said “A foreign slave of Thaqif teaches him”, at times “a madman”; they contradicted themselves.15إِنَّا كَاشِفُواْ ٱلۡعَذَابِ قَلِيلًاۚ إِنَّكُمۡ عَآئِدُونَ ١٥Lo! We withdraw the torment a little. Lo! ye return (to disbelief).InsightAccording to Elmalılı, you will not keep your promise to believe; you will forget this awakening and pleading and return to your former disbelief.16يَوۡمَ نَبۡطِشُ ٱلۡبَطۡشَةَ ٱلۡكُبۡرَىٰٓ إِنَّا مُنتَقِمُونَ ١٦On the day when We shall seize them with the greater seizure, (then) in truth We shall punish.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, this is the Resurrection; by the second report, the great seizure is a prelude before it.17۞وَلَقَدۡ فَتَنَّا قَبۡلَهُمۡ قَوۡمَ فِرۡعَوۡنَ وَجَآءَهُمۡ رَسُولࣱ كَرِيمٌ ١٧And verily We tried before them Pharaoh’s folk, when there came unto them a noble messenger.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, Pharaoh is given as an example because his rule was the greatest regime of oppression and evil.18أَنۡ أَدُّوٓاْ إِلَيَّ عِبَادَ ٱللَّهِۖ إِنِّي لَكُمۡ رَسُولٌ أَمِينࣱ ١٨Saying: Give up to me the slaves of Allah. Lo! I am a faithful messenger unto you.19وَأَن لَّا تَعۡلُواْ عَلَى ٱللَّهِۖ إِنِّيٓ ءَاتِيكُم بِسُلۡطَٰنࣲ مُّبِينࣲ ١٩And saying: Be not proud against Allah. Lo! I bring you a clear warrant.20وَإِنِّي عُذۡتُ بِرَبِّي وَرَبِّكُمۡ أَن تَرۡجُمُونِ ٢٠And lo! I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord lest ye stone me to death.21وَإِن لَّمۡ تُؤۡمِنُواْ لِي فَٱعۡتَزِلُونِ ٢١And if ye put no faith in me, then let me go.22فَدَعَا رَبَّهُۥٓ أَنَّ هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ قَوۡمࣱ مُّجۡرِمُونَ ٢٢And he cried unto his Lord, (saying): These are guilty folk.23فَأَسۡرِ بِعِبَادِي لَيۡلًا إِنَّكُم مُّتَّبَعُونَ ٢٣Then (his Lord commanded): Take away My slaves by night. Lo! ye will be followed.24وَٱتۡرُكِ ٱلۡبَحۡرَ رَهۡوًاۖ إِنَّهُمۡ جُندࣱ مُّغۡرَقُونَ ٢٤And leave the sea behind at rest, for lo! they are a drowned host.25كَمۡ تَرَكُواْ مِن جَنَّـٰتࣲ وَعُيُونࣲ ٢٥How many were the gardens and the watersprings that they left behind.26وَزُرُوعࣲ وَمَقَامࣲ كَرِيمࣲ ٢٦And the cornlands and the goodly sites.27وَنَعۡمَةࣲ كَانُواْ فِيهَا فَٰكِهِينَ ٢٧And pleasant things wherein they took delight.28كَذَٰلِكَۖ وَأَوۡرَثۡنَٰهَا قَوۡمًا ءَاخَرِينَ ٢٨Even so (it was), and We made it an inheritance for other folk.29فَمَا بَكَتۡ عَلَيۡهِمُ ٱلسَّمَآءُ وَٱلۡأَرۡضُ وَمَا كَانُواْ مُنظَرِينَ ٢٩And the heaven and the earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved.30وَلَقَدۡ نَجَّيۡنَا بَنِيٓ إِسۡرَـٰٓءِيلَ مِنَ ٱلۡعَذَابِ ٱلۡمُهِينِ ٣٠And We delivered the Children of Israel from the shameful doom.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, after what was done to Pharaoh and his people, the kindness shown to Moses and his people is described; the drowning’s wisdom was securing this deliverance.31مِن فِرۡعَوۡنَۚ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ عَالِيࣰا مِّنَ ٱلۡمُسۡرِفِينَ ٣١(We delivered them) from Pharaoh. Lo! he was a tyrant of the wanton ones.32وَلَقَدِ ٱخۡتَرۡنَٰهُمۡ عَلَىٰ عِلۡمٍ عَلَى ٱلۡعَٰلَمِينَ ٣٢And We chose them, purposely, above (all) creatures.33وَءَاتَيۡنَٰهُم مِّنَ ٱلۡأٓيَٰتِ مَا فِيهِ بَلَـٰٓؤࣱاْ مُّبِينٌ ٣٣And We gave them portents wherein was a clear trial.34إِنَّ هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ لَيَقُولُونَ ٣٤Lo! these, forsooth, are saying.35إِنۡ هِيَ إِلَّا مَوۡتَتُنَا ٱلۡأُولَىٰ وَمَا نَحۡنُ بِمُنشَرِينَ ٣٥There is naught but our first death, and we shall not be raised again.36فَأۡتُواْ بِـَٔابَآئِنَآ إِن كُنتُمۡ صَٰدِقِينَ ٣٦Bring back our fathers, if ye speak the truth.37أَهُمۡ خَيۡرٌ أَمۡ قَوۡمُ تُبَّعࣲ وَٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبۡلِهِمۡ أَهۡلَكۡنَٰهُمۡۚ إِنَّهُمۡ كَانُواْ مُجۡرِمِينَ ٣٧Are they better, or the folk of Tubb’a and those before them? We destroyed them, for surely they were guilty.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, this answers those who deny anything after the first death: We destroyed those stronger than you too.38وَمَا خَلَقۡنَا ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ وَمَا بَيۡنَهُمَا لَٰعِبِينَ ٣٨And We created not the heavens and the earth, and all that is between them, in play.39مَا خَلَقۡنَٰهُمَآ إِلَّا بِٱلۡحَقِّ وَلَٰكِنَّ أَكۡثَرَهُمۡ لَا يَعۡلَمُونَ ٣٩We created them not save with truth; but most of them know not.40إِنَّ يَوۡمَ ٱلۡفَصۡلِ مِيقَٰتُهُمۡ أَجۡمَعِينَ ٤٠Assuredly the Day of Decision is the term for all of them.41يَوۡمَ لَا يُغۡنِي مَوۡلًى عَن مَّوۡلࣰى شَيۡـࣰٔا وَلَا هُمۡ يُنصَرُونَ ٤١A day when friend can in naught avail friend, nor can they be helped.42إِلَّا مَن رَّحِمَ ٱللَّهُۚ إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلۡعَزِيزُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ ٤٢Save him on whom Allah hath mercy. Lo! He is the Mighty, the Merciful.43إِنَّ شَجَرَتَ ٱلزَّقُّومِ ٤٣Lo! the tree of Zaqqum.44طَعَامُ ٱلۡأَثِيمِ ٤٤The food of the sinner.45كَٱلۡمُهۡلِ يَغۡلِي فِي ٱلۡبُطُونِ ٤٥Like molten brass, it seetheth in their bellies.46كَغَلۡيِ ٱلۡحَمِيمِ ٤٦As the seething of boiling water.47خُذُوهُ فَٱعۡتِلُوهُ إِلَىٰ سَوَآءِ ٱلۡجَحِيمِ ٤٧(And it will be said): Take him and drag him to the midst of hell.48ثُمَّ صُبُّواْ فَوۡقَ رَأۡسِهِۦ مِنۡ عَذَابِ ٱلۡحَمِيمِ ٤٨Then pour upon his head the torment of boiling water.49ذُقۡ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ ٱلۡعَزِيزُ ٱلۡكَرِيمُ ٤٩(Saying): Taste! Lo! thou wast forsooth the mighty, the noble.50إِنَّ هَٰذَا مَا كُنتُم بِهِۦ تَمۡتَرُونَ ٥٠Lo! this is that whereof ye used to doubt.51إِنَّ ٱلۡمُتَّقِينَ فِي مَقَامٍ أَمِينࣲ ٥١Lo! those who kept their duty will be in a place secured.52فِي جَنَّـٰتࣲ وَعُيُونࣲ ٥٢Amid gardens and watersprings.53يَلۡبَسُونَ مِن سُندُسࣲ وَإِسۡتَبۡرَقࣲ مُّتَقَٰبِلِينَ ٥٣Attired in silk and silk embroidery, facing one another.54كَذَٰلِكَ وَزَوَّجۡنَٰهُم بِحُورٍ عِينࣲ ٥٤Even so (it will be). And We shall wed them unto fair ones with wide, lovely eyes.55يَدۡعُونَ فِيهَا بِكُلِّ فَٰكِهَةٍ ءَامِنِينَ ٥٥They call therein for every fruit in safety.56لَا يَذُوقُونَ فِيهَا ٱلۡمَوۡتَ إِلَّا ٱلۡمَوۡتَةَ ٱلۡأُولَىٰۖ وَوَقَىٰهُمۡ عَذَابَ ٱلۡجَحِيمِ ٥٦They taste not death therein, save the first death. And He hath saved them from the doom of hell.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, for the mindful there is no death of the barzakh after the first death; and in the Hereafter there is no death at all.57فَضۡلࣰا مِّن رَّبِّكَۚ ذَٰلِكَ هُوَ ٱلۡفَوۡزُ ٱلۡعَظِيمُ ٥٧A bounty from thy Lord. That is the supreme triumph.58فَإِنَّمَا يَسَّرۡنَٰهُ بِلِسَانِكَ لَعَلَّهُمۡ يَتَذَكَّرُونَ ٥٨And We have made (this Scripture) easy in thy language only that they may heed.59فَٱرۡتَقِبۡ إِنَّهُم مُّرۡتَقِبُونَ ٥٩Wait then (O Muhammad). Lo! they (too) are waiting.
