Surah Al-Kawthar
The Abundance · Surah 108 · Meccan · 3 verses
1إِنَّآ أَعۡطَيۡنَٰكَ ٱلۡكَوۡثَرَ ١Lo! We have given thee Abundance.InsightElmalılı explains that the word ‘kawthar’ means ‘much, very much’. When a Bedouin woman was asked what her son had brought back from a journey, she said ‘He came with kawthar’, meaning he came with a great deal. Al-Kawthar is also the name of a special river in Paradise.2فَصَلِّ لِرَبِّكَ وَٱنۡحَرۡ ٢So pray unto thy Lord, and sacrifice.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, the letter ‘fa’ at the beginning indicates a reason: because so much has been given, gratitude in the same measure is due. For him, prayer gathers all the parts of gratitude offered with the heart, the tongue and the whole body. It is the pillar of religion.3إِنَّ شَانِئَكَ هُوَ ٱلۡأَبۡتَرُ ٣Lo! it is thy insulter (and not thou) who is without posterity.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, what is meant is not one who is angry for a moment and moves on, but one who persists in hatred. Those who later repent and believe are outside this judgement.
