Surah Al-Ikhlas

The Sincerity · Surah 112 · Meccan · 4 verses

1قُلۡ هُوَ ٱللَّهُ أَحَدٌ ۝١Say: He is Allah, the One.InsightElmalılı draws attention to the command ‘Say’: these words are not a conclusion drawn from human thought, but the truth by which Allah makes Himself known. They should be affirmed with the heart, spoken with the tongue and passed on to others exactly as they are.2ٱللَّهُ ٱلصَّمَدُ ۝٢Allah, the eternally Besought of all.InsightElmalılı gives two meanings of ‘as-Samad’. The first is the One to whom every wish is directed; in this sense the most eminent elder of a people is called ‘samad al-qawm’. The second is that which has no hollow, which is whole and without gap, like the Turkish word ‘som’ (solid).3لَمۡ يَلِدۡ وَلَمۡ يُولَدۡ ۝٣He begetteth not nor was begotten.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, begetting is tied to the need of mortal beings, who cannot sustain their own existence, to continue their line. What is a perfection for the mortal is a deficiency for Allah, who unites every perfection in Himself. Allah is not divided, and no part separates from Him.4وَلَمۡ يَكُن لَّهُۥ كُفُوًا أَحَدُۢ ۝٤And there is none comparable unto Him.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, however much perfection is attributed to something that came into being, it is still created and cannot be equal to Him. The whole universe, with its Throne and Footstool, its world and Hereafter, is not His equal.
