Surah At-Takathur
The Rivalry in world increase · Surah 102 · Meccan · 8 verses
1أَلۡهَىٰكُمُ ٱلتَّكَاثُرُ ١Rivalry in worldly increase distracteth you.InsightElmalılı explains “alhakum” as keeping a person busy with something empty and away from what matters, and “takathur” as the pride and race of having more. One report says some, having counted the living, went on to count the dead in the graves.2حَتَّىٰ زُرۡتُمُ ٱلۡمَقَابِرَ ٢Until ye come to the graves.3كَلَّا سَوۡفَ تَعۡلَمُونَ ٣Nay, but ye will come to know.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, this is a warning, “It is not so!”: forgetting the real duty in a world that ends in the grave and amusing oneself with empty, passing things does not befit people of reason.4ثُمَّ كَلَّا سَوۡفَ تَعۡلَمُونَ ٤Nay, but ye will come to know.5كَلَّا لَوۡ تَعۡلَمُونَ عِلۡمَ ٱلۡيَقِينِ ٥Nay, would that ye knew (now) with a sure knowledge.6لَتَرَوُنَّ ٱلۡجَحِيمَ ٦For ye will behold hell-fire.InsightElmalılı sees an escalation in the repeated warnings: each is stronger than the last. One view says the first refers to the moment of death and the second to the resurrection.7ثُمَّ لَتَرَوُنَّهَا عَيۡنَ ٱلۡيَقِينِ ٧Aye, ye will behold it with sure vision.InsightElmalılı gives two meanings to “‘ayn al-yaqin”: seeing plainly with the eye of certainty, or a sight that is certainty itself. The first is a warning, the second actual seeing at the gathering.8ثُمَّ لَتُسۡـَٔلُنَّ يَوۡمَئِذٍ عَنِ ٱلنَّعِيمِ ٨Then, on that day, ye will be asked concerning pleasure.InsightElmalılı explains “na‘im” as every blessing a person enjoys: life, health, well-being, even a sip of sweet, cool water.
