Surah An-Nas

Mankind · Surah 114 · Meccan · 6 verses

1قُلۡ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ ٱلنَّاسِ ۝١Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, the Lord is the One who raises feeling human beings from dark earth, matures them from state to state, gives them reason and makes known to them their human duties. Through this nurturing, He lets people sense His existence.2مَلِكِ ٱلنَّاسِ ۝٢The King of mankind.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, He is the true King who directs all human faculties towards good. He gives dominion to whom He wills and takes it from whom He wills; He is the King of kings.3إِلَٰهِ ٱلنَّاسِ ۝٣The god of mankind.InsightElmalılı explains that these three names come in an order: the Lord who nurtures, the King who governs, and finally the God who is worshipped. For him, a person comes to know their God when they understand where they came from, where they are going, and what will truly satisfy the heart.4مِن شَرِّ ٱلۡوَسۡوَاسِ ٱلۡخَنَّاسِ ۝٤From the evil of the sneaking whisperer.InsightElmalılı explains the word ‘khannas’ as one who shrinks back and withdraws. The whisperer deceives by lurking and returns again and again to whisper. According to Elmalılı, it withdraws when Allah is remembered and comes back when He is forgotten.5ٱلَّذِي يُوَسۡوِسُ فِي صُدُورِ ٱلنَّاسِ ۝٥Who whispereth in the hearts of mankind.InsightElmalılı defines whispering (waswasah) as giving evil suggestions secretly and in a hushed voice. This can happen within a person and also among people in society.6مِنَ ٱلۡجِنَّةِ وَٱلنَّاسِ ۝٦Of the jinn and of mankind.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, those who whisper are not only unseen beings; there are whisperers among people too. The verse covers both kinds.
