Surah Al-Masad
The Palm Fiber · Surah 111 · Meccan · 5 verses
1تَبَّتۡ يَدَآ أَبِي لَهَبࣲ وَتَبَّ ١The power of Abu Lahab will perish, and he will perish.InsightElmalılı says this verb can carry both a statement and a curse-like style, as the Arabs said “may he be ruined”: it tells that he deserved loss and destruction.2مَآ أَغۡنَىٰ عَنۡهُ مَالُهُۥ وَمَا كَسَبَ ٢His wealth and gains will not exempt him.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, neither his wealth nor his earnings did him any good; none of it was of any use to save him.3سَيَصۡلَىٰ نَارࣰا ذَاتَ لَهَبࣲ ٣He will be plunged in flaming Fire.InsightElmalılı says “lahab” is an extremely fierce flame: the fire of Hell, which burns not only bodies but wraps the soul and reaches the heart.4وَٱمۡرَأَتُهُۥ حَمَّالَةَ ٱلۡحَطَبِ ٤And his wife, the wood-carrier.InsightElmalılı relates that his wife was Umm Jamil, daughter of Harb and sister of Abu Sufyan. She too will enter that fire with Abu Lahab.5فِي جِيدِهَا حَبۡلࣱ مِّن مَّسَدِۭ ٥Will have upon her neck a halter of palm-fibre.InsightElmalılı says “jid” means not just a neck but a fine neck worthy of a necklace: instead of an ornament, there will be a rope around it.
