Surah Al-Humazah
The Traducer · Surah 104 · Meccan · 9 verses
1وَيۡلࣱ لِّكُلِّ هُمَزَةࣲ لُّمَزَةٍ ١Woe unto every slandering traducer.InsightElmalılı says “humazah” means one who habitually wounds people. The verse describes those who have made this a habit.2ٱلَّذِي جَمَعَ مَالࣰا وَعَدَّدَهُۥ ٢Who hath gathered wealth (of this world) and arranged it.3يَحۡسَبُ أَنَّ مَالَهُۥٓ أَخۡلَدَهُۥ ٣He thinketh that his wealth will render him immortal.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, he thinks his wealth has already made him eternal. He does not consider that wealth hoarded only to be counted, of no use to anyone, will become a disaster for him.4كَلَّاۖ لَيُنۢبَذَنَّ فِي ٱلۡحُطَمَةِ ٤Nay, but verily he will be flung to the Consuming One.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, what saves a person is not wealth but, as the previous surah said, faith in the truth, knowledge and good deeds. “Thrown” describes something worthless being cast away.5وَمَآ أَدۡرَىٰكَ مَا ٱلۡحُطَمَةُ ٥Ah, what will convey unto thee what the Consuming One is.6نَارُ ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡمُوقَدَةُ ٦(It is) the fire of Allah, kindled.7ٱلَّتِي تَطَّلِعُ عَلَى ٱلۡأَفۡـِٔدَةِ ٧Which leapeth up over the hearts (of men).InsightAccording to Elmalılı, calling it “the fire of Allah” shows it is too terrible to compare with known fires. It passes through the body to the soul and the heart, because the source of evil is there.8إِنَّهَا عَلَيۡهِم مُّؤۡصَدَةࣱ ٨Lo! it is closed in on them.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, the fire will be pressed down over the slanderers and mockers and its doors shut, braced with long columns so they cannot open.9فِي عَمَدࣲ مُّمَدَّدَةِۭ ٩In outstretched columns.
