The Overwhelming · Surah 88 · Meccan · 26 verses
1هَلۡ أَتَىٰكَ حَدِيثُ ٱلۡغَٰشِيَةِ ١Hath there come unto thee tidings of the Overwhelming.2وُجُوهࣱ يَوۡمَئِذٍ خَٰشِعَةٌ ٢On that day (many) faces will be downcast.3عَامِلَةࣱ نَّاصِبَةࣱ ٣Toiling, weary.4تَصۡلَىٰ نَارًا حَامِيَةࣰ ٤Scorched by burning fire.5تُسۡقَىٰ مِنۡ عَيۡنٍ ءَانِيَةࣲ ٥Drinking from a boiling spring.6لَّيۡسَ لَهُمۡ طَعَامٌ إِلَّا مِن ضَرِيعࣲ ٦No food for them save bitter thorn-fruit.7لَّا يُسۡمِنُ وَلَا يُغۡنِي مِن جُوعࣲ ٧Which doth not nourish nor release from hunger.8وُجُوهࣱ يَوۡمَئِذࣲ نَّاعِمَةࣱ ٨In that day other faces will be calm.9لِّسَعۡيِهَا رَاضِيَةࣱ ٩Glad for their effort past.10فِي جَنَّةٍ عَالِيَةࣲ ١٠In a high Garden.11لَّا تَسۡمَعُ فِيهَا لَٰغِيَةࣰ ١١Where they hear no idle speech.12فِيهَا عَيۡنࣱ جَارِيَةࣱ ١٢Wherein is a gushing spring.13فِيهَا سُرُرࣱ مَّرۡفُوعَةࣱ ١٣Wherein are couches raised.InsightElmalılı explains “sarir” as a throne, seat or pavilion where one sits in joy; it is raised both above the ground and in honour.14وَأَكۡوَابࣱ مَّوۡضُوعَةࣱ ١٤And goblets set at hand.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, these are handleless vessels and cups placed near them so they can drink whenever they wish: nothing the people of Paradise want is kept waiting.15وَنَمَارِقُ مَصۡفُوفَةࣱ ١٥And cushions ranged.InsightElmalılı explains “namariq” as cushions placed to lean on: a picture of comfort and peace.16وَزَرَابِيُّ مَبۡثُوثَةٌ ١٦And silken carpets spread.InsightElmalılı explains “zarabiyy” as fine, splendid furnishings, and notes the word is also used for grasses mixing yellow, red and green.17أَفَلَا يَنظُرُونَ إِلَى ٱلۡإِبِلِ كَيۡفَ خُلِقَتۡ ١٧Will they not regard the camels, how they are created.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, this reminds those who deny the resurrection of the wonders seen even in the most familiar parts of creation. Camels were among such wonders the Arabs saw every day.18وَإِلَى ٱلسَّمَآءِ كَيۡفَ رُفِعَتۡ ١٨And the heaven, how it is raised.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, in that astonishing sky they watch night and day there are countless bodies, each swimming in its orbit without pillar or support.19وَإِلَى ٱلۡجِبَالِ كَيۡفَ نُصِبَتۡ ١٩And the hills, how they are set up.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, mountains rise from the earth towards the sky, wonders of creation that limit the view and provide many benefits.20وَإِلَى ٱلۡأَرۡضِ كَيۡفَ سُطِحَتۡ ٢٠And the earth, how it is spread.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, the earth they live on, which yields to them and in which they will be buried, is spread out as a surface with mountains, valleys and plains.21فَذَكِّرۡ إِنَّمَآ أَنتَ مُذَكِّرࣱ ٢١Remind them, for thou art but a remembrancer.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, if they still do not look and reflect, remind them and advise them; but be content with that and do not force them further.22لَّسۡتَ عَلَيۡهِم بِمُصَيۡطِرٍ ٢٢Thou art not at all a warder over them.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, the Prophet is not to force them to think or rule their hearts to make them believe as he wishes. Faith cannot be forced.23إِلَّا مَن تَوَلَّىٰ وَكَفَرَ ٢٣But whoso is averse and disbelieveth.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, this is one who will not listen to the reminder and persists in disbelief, ungrateful for this guidance.24فَيُعَذِّبُهُ ٱللَّهُ ٱلۡعَذَابَ ٱلۡأَكۡبَرَ ٢٤Allah will punish him with direst punishment.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, the greatest punishment is that of the Hereafter; even if a worldly punishment is added, it is small compared with it.25إِنَّ إِلَيۡنَآ إِيَابَهُمۡ ٢٥Lo! unto Us is their return.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, however much they turn away and try to flee, they will finally return to Allah; and no one but Allah will take their account.26ثُمَّ إِنَّ عَلَيۡنَا حِسَابَهُم ٢٦And Ours their reckoning.
