Pairs
Glory be to Him Who created all the sexual pairs, of that which the earth groweth, and of themselves, and of that which they know not.
Translation: Marmaduke Pickthall
Meaning
Glory be to Him who created all pairs: of what the earth grows, of themselves, and of what they do not know.
Insight
Elmalılı says “subhan” means declaring Allah free of every flaw, and is also used in moments of great wonder. Here there is both a warning to the ungrateful and wonder at the order of pairs in creation.
Reflect
Count the “pairs” around you: night and day, warm and cold… What did you find?
This short note is based on Elmalılı Hamdi Yazır’s Turkish commentary and has not yet been reviewed by a scholar.
