Ya-Sin 36:29

Ya Sin · Meccan · Juz 23 · Page 442

A Single Cry

إِن كَانَتۡ إِلَّا صَيۡحَةࣰ وَٰحِدَةࣰ فَإِذَا هُمۡ خَٰمِدُونَ ۝٢٩

It was but one Shout, and lo! they were extinct.

Translation: Marmaduke Pickthall

Meaning

It was only a single cry, and at once they were extinguished.

Insight

Elmalılı explains “extinguished” as the dying out of a fiery people who wanted to burn everything. He says it is broader to understand it as the fall of pagan Rome before the call of Jesus, not only the ruin of one town.

Reflect

Remember that nothing that trusts in its own power lasts.
