Surah Quraysh

Quraysh · Surah 106 · Meccan · 4 verses

1لِإِيلَٰفِ قُرَيۡشٍ ۝١For the taming of Qureysh.InsightElmalılı explains “ilaf” as making familiar, accustoming. This surah is linked to the previous one: the army of the elephant was destroyed so that Quraysh could live in safety.2إِۦلَٰفِهِمۡ رِحۡلَةَ ٱلشِّتَآءِ وَٱلصَّيۡفِ ۝٢For their taming (We cause) the caravans to set forth in winter and summer.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, these are the trade journeys of Quraysh, to Yemen in winter and Syria in summer. Allah gave them safety on these journeys and welcome where they went.3فَلۡيَعۡبُدُواْ رَبَّ هَٰذَا ٱلۡبَيۡتِ ۝٣So let them worship the Lord of this House.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, this is a call to Quraysh: let them worship the Lord, without partner or equal, of this ancient House, the Ka‘bah, which was protected from the army of the elephant, and give up idolatry.4ٱلَّذِيٓ أَطۡعَمَهُم مِّن جُوعࣲ وَءَامَنَهُم مِّنۡ خَوۡفِۭ ۝٤Who hath fed them against hunger and hath made them safe from fear.InsightElmalılı links this to Abraham’s prayer: in a valley where no crops grow, beside the Ka‘bah, Allah provided for them and made them safe.
