The Emissaries · Surah 77 · Meccan · 50 verses
1وَٱلۡمُرۡسَلَٰتِ عُرۡفࣰا ١By the emissary winds, (sent) one after another.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, here too, as in as-Saffat and adh-Dhariyat, oaths are sworn by certain forces: those sent, those that blow, spread, separate and deliver a reminder.2فَٱلۡعَٰصِفَٰتِ عَصۡفࣰا ٢By the raging hurricanes.3وَٱلنَّـٰشِرَٰتِ نَشۡرࣰا ٣By those which cause earth’s vegetation to revive.4فَٱلۡفَٰرِقَٰتِ فَرۡقࣰا ٤By those who winnow with a winnowing.5فَٱلۡمُلۡقِيَٰتِ ذِكۡرًا ٥By those who bring down the Reminder.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, “dhikr” means a book, counsel, lesson and an unforgettable memorial. Those delivering it are above all the angels bringing revelation to the prophets.6عُذۡرًا أَوۡ نُذۡرًا ٦To excuse or to warn.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, this is an excuse that erases faults for those on the truth, and a warning for those on falsehood.7إِنَّمَا تُوعَدُونَ لَوَٰقِعࣱ ٧Surely that which ye are promised will befall.8فَإِذَا ٱلنُّجُومُ طُمِسَتۡ ٨So when the stars are put out.9وَإِذَا ٱلسَّمَآءُ فُرِجَتۡ ٩And when the sky is riven asunder.10وَإِذَا ٱلۡجِبَالُ نُسِفَتۡ ١٠And when the mountains are blown away.11وَإِذَا ٱلرُّسُلُ أُقِّتَتۡ ١١And when the messengers are brought unto their time appointed.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, this is the time the prophets awaited, when they will testify against their communities: the Resurrection.12لِأَيِّ يَوۡمٍ أُجِّلَتۡ ١٢For what day is the time appointed.13لِيَوۡمِ ٱلۡفَصۡلِ ١٣For the Day of Decision.14وَمَآ أَدۡرَىٰكَ مَا يَوۡمُ ٱلۡفَصۡلِ ١٤And what will convey unto thee what the Day of Decision is.15وَيۡلࣱ يَوۡمَئِذࣲ لِّلۡمُكَذِّبِينَ ١٥Woe unto the repudiators on that day.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, this verse is the surah’s refrain; “wayl” originally means the arrival of evil.16أَلَمۡ نُهۡلِكِ ٱلۡأَوَّلِينَ ١٦Destroyed We not the former folk.17ثُمَّ نُتۡبِعُهُمُ ٱلۡأٓخِرِينَ ١٧Then caused the latter folk to follow after.18كَذَٰلِكَ نَفۡعَلُ بِٱلۡمُجۡرِمِينَ ١٨Thus deal We ever with the guilty.19وَيۡلࣱ يَوۡمَئِذࣲ لِّلۡمُكَذِّبِينَ ١٩Woe unto the repudiators on that day.20أَلَمۡ نَخۡلُقكُّم مِّن مَّآءࣲ مَّهِينࣲ ٢٠Did We not create you from a base fluid.21فَجَعَلۡنَٰهُ فِي قَرَارࣲ مَّكِينٍ ٢١Which We laid up in a safe abode.22إِلَىٰ قَدَرࣲ مَّعۡلُومࣲ ٢٢For a known term.23فَقَدَرۡنَا فَنِعۡمَ ٱلۡقَٰدِرُونَ ٢٣Thus We arranged. How excellent is Our arranging.24وَيۡلࣱ يَوۡمَئِذࣲ لِّلۡمُكَذِّبِينَ ٢٤Woe unto the repudiators on that day.25أَلَمۡ نَجۡعَلِ ٱلۡأَرۡضَ كِفَاتًا ٢٥Have We not made the earth a receptacle.InsightElmalılı explains “kifat” as bringing together and gathering: the earth gathers the living upon it and the dead within it.26أَحۡيَآءࣰ وَأَمۡوَٰتࣰا ٢٦Both for the living and the dead.27وَجَعَلۡنَا فِيهَا رَوَٰسِيَ شَٰمِخَٰتࣲ وَأَسۡقَيۡنَٰكُم مَّآءࣰ فُرَاتࣰا ٢٧And placed therein high mountains and given you to drink sweet water therein.InsightElmalılı explains “rawasi” as heavy, firmly set mountains, and “shamikhat” as towering ones: it reminds them they are nourished by Allah’s blessings on every side.28وَيۡلࣱ يَوۡمَئِذࣲ لِّلۡمُكَذِّبِينَ ٢٨Woe unto the repudiators on that day.29ٱنطَلِقُوٓاْ إِلَىٰ مَا كُنتُم بِهِۦ تُكَذِّبُونَ ٢٩(It will be said unto them:) Depart unto that (doom) which ye used to deny.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, on that Day of Sorting the deniers will be told to leave the place where they enjoyed blessings in the world and go to the punishment they denied.30ٱنطَلِقُوٓاْ إِلَىٰ ظِلࣲّ ذِي ثَلَٰثِ شُعَبࣲ ٣٠Depart unto the shadow falling threefold.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, they have no right to the shade of the Throne reserved for believers; they are sent to the three-forked shade of Hell’s smoke.31لَّا ظَلِيلࣲ وَلَا يُغۡنِي مِنَ ٱللَّهَبِ ٣١(Which yet is) no relief nor shelter from the flame.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, since that shade is forked, flames rush between its prongs; so it is of no use and gives no refuge.32إِنَّهَا تَرۡمِي بِشَرَرࣲ كَٱلۡقَصۡرِ ٣٢Lo! it throweth up sparks like the castles.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, “qasr” here has been explained as a great, solidly built structure; it conveys the size of the sparks.33كَأَنَّهُۥ جِمَٰلَتࣱ صُفۡرࣱ ٣٣(Or) as it might be camels of bright yellow hue.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, the previous comparison concerns size, while this one concerns colour, number and movement.34وَيۡلࣱ يَوۡمَئِذࣲ لِّلۡمُكَذِّبِينَ ٣٤Woe unto the repudiators on that day.InsightAccording to Elmalılı, this is addressed to those who did not believe in that fire, nor that the three-forked shade could not protect them, and sought refuge in it.35هَٰذَا يَوۡمُ لَا يَنطِقُونَ ٣٥This is a day wherein they speak not.36وَلَا يُؤۡذَنُ لَهُمۡ فَيَعۡتَذِرُونَ ٣٦Nor are they suffered to put forth excuses.37وَيۡلࣱ يَوۡمَئِذࣲ لِّلۡمُكَذِّبِينَ ٣٧Woe unto the repudiators on that day.38هَٰذَا يَوۡمُ ٱلۡفَصۡلِۖ جَمَعۡنَٰكُمۡ وَٱلۡأَوَّلِينَ ٣٨This is the Day of Decision, We have brought you and the men of old together.39فَإِن كَانَ لَكُمۡ كَيۡدࣱ فَكِيدُونِ ٣٩If now ye have any wit, outwit Me.40وَيۡلࣱ يَوۡمَئِذࣲ لِّلۡمُكَذِّبِينَ ٤٠Woe unto the repudiators on that day.41إِنَّ ٱلۡمُتَّقِينَ فِي ظِلَٰلࣲ وَعُيُونࣲ ٤١Lo! those who kept their duty are amid shade and fountains.42وَفَوَٰكِهَ مِمَّا يَشۡتَهُونَ ٤٢And fruits such as they desire.43كُلُواْ وَٱشۡرَبُواْ هَنِيٓـَٔۢا بِمَا كُنتُمۡ تَعۡمَلُونَ ٤٣(Unto them it is said:) Eat, drink and welcome, O ye blessed, in return for what ye did.44إِنَّا كَذَٰلِكَ نَجۡزِي ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِينَ ٤٤Thus do We reward the good.45وَيۡلࣱ يَوۡمَئِذࣲ لِّلۡمُكَذِّبِينَ ٤٥Woe unto the repudiators on that day.46كُلُواْ وَتَمَتَّعُواْ قَلِيلًا إِنَّكُم مُّجۡرِمُونَ ٤٦Eat and take your ease (on earth) a little. Lo! ye are guilty.47وَيۡلࣱ يَوۡمَئِذࣲ لِّلۡمُكَذِّبِينَ ٤٧Woe unto the repudiators on that day.48وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمُ ٱرۡكَعُواْ لَا يَرۡكَعُونَ ٤٨When it is said unto them: Bow down, they bow not down.49وَيۡلࣱ يَوۡمَئِذࣲ لِّلۡمُكَذِّبِينَ ٤٩Woe unto the repudiators on that day.50فَبِأَيِّ حَدِيثِۭ بَعۡدَهُۥ يُؤۡمِنُونَ ٥٠In what statement, after this, will they believe.
