Avert the Punishment
And who say: Our Lord! Avert from us the doom of hell; lo! the doom thereof is anguish.
Translation: Marmaduke Pickthall
Meaning
“Our Lord, avert from us the punishment of Hell; its punishment is unrelenting.”
Insight
According to Elmalılı, escaping Hell is their first hope; not relying on their worship and efforts, they always pray for deliverance. “Gharam” means something that won’t let go, like a creditor on one’s back.
Reflect
Don’t rely on your worship; rely on Allah’s mercy and pray.
