Advice to His Son
And (remember) when Luqman said unto his son, when he was exhorting him: O my dear son! Ascribe no partners unto Allah. Lo! to ascribe partners (unto Him) is a tremendous wrong.
Translation: Marmaduke Pickthall
Meaning
Luqman said to his son, advising him: “My dear son! Do not associate partners with Allah; that is a great wrong.”
Insight
Elmalılı explains “wa‘z” by al-Khalil’s definition: reminding of good in a way that softens the heart. Luqman begins his advice tenderly with “my dear son”.
