Exultation and Despair
And when We cause mankind to taste of mercy they rejoice therein; but if an evil thing befall them as the consequence of their own deeds, lo! they are in despair.
Translation: Marmaduke Pickthall
Meaning
When We let people taste mercy, they rejoice; when evil afflicts them, they despair.
Insight
According to Elmalılı, rejoicing in Allah’s grace is not forbidden but commanded; yet arrogance and despairing in hardship are evil.
