Remembrance and Reflection
Such as remember Allah, standing, sitting, and reclining, and consider the creation of the heavens and the earth, (and say): Our Lord! Thou createdst not this in vain. Glory be to Thee! Preserve us from the doom of Fire.
Translation: Marmaduke Pickthall
Meaning
People of understanding remember Allah standing, sitting and lying down, and reflect on the creation of the heavens and the earth. They say: ‘Our Lord, You did not create this in vain.’
Insight
According to Elmalılı, these three states cover every human state: working and resting alike. He also sees remembrance as the precondition of reflection and true knowledge. A heart that remembers Allah reads creation more deeply.
Reflect
Combine an everyday action, such as walking, with a short remembrance.
This short note is based on Elmalılı Hamdi Yazır’s Turkish commentary and has not yet been reviewed by a scholar.
