Unexpected Mercy
وَمَا كُنتَ تَرۡجُوٓاْ أَن يُلۡقَىٰٓ إِلَيۡكَ ٱلۡكِتَٰبُ إِلَّا رَحۡمَةࣰ مِّن رَّبِّكَۖ فَلَا تَكُونَنَّ ظَهِيرࣰا لِّلۡكَٰفِرِينَ ٨٦
Thou hadst no hope that the Scripture would be inspired in thee; but it is a mercy from thy Lord, so never be a helper to the disbelievers.
Translation: Marmaduke Pickthall
Meaning
You did not expect the Book to be conveyed to you; but it is mercy from your Lord.
Insight
According to Elmalılı, just as the Book came while he was unlettered, his return would also come, unexpected, as a blessing from his Lord.
Reflect
Trust in mercy from where you don’t expect.
