To Strike You Down with Their Eyes

And lo! those who disbelieve would fain disconcert thee with their eyes when they hear the Reminder, and they say: Lo! he is indeed mad.

Translation: Marmaduke Pickthall

Meaning

Those who disbelieve would almost strike you down with their eyes when they hear the message.

Insight

According to Elmalılı, these were the disbelievers of Mecca who were ungrateful for Allah’s favour and denied His signs; when the Qur’an was recited they glared at it in hatred.

Reflect

Seek refuge in Allah from those who look at you with ill will.
