Opposing Allah
That is because they were opposed to Allah and His messenger; and whoso is opposed to Allah, (for him) verily Allah is stern in reprisal.
Translation: Marmaduke Pickthall
Meaning
That is because they opposed Allah and His Messenger.
Insight
According to Elmalılı, whoever takes a stand against Allah meets severe punishment: if not in this world, then in the Hereafter; worldly punishment passes, but that of the Hereafter does not.
