Would It Had Been the End

يَٰلَيۡتَهَا كَانَتِ ٱلۡقَاضِيَةَ ۝٢٧

Oh, would that it had been death.

Translation: Marmaduke Pickthall

Meaning

“I wish it had been the decisive end.”

Insight

According to Elmalılı, the pronoun here refers to the first death: the one given his record in his left hand wishes that first death had ended everything.

Reflect

Live knowing that death is not the end.
