Neither Grief Nor Exultation

That ye grieve not for the sake of that which hath escaped you, nor yet exult because of that which hath been given. Allah loveth not all prideful boasters.

Translation: Marmaduke Pickthall

Meaning

So that you not despair over what has escaped you, nor exult over what He has given you.

Insight

According to Elmalılı, the wisdom of its being written is not to grieve over lost worldly blessings, but to find comfort in “this was Allah’s decree” and keep one’s composure.

Reflect

Stay calm in a loss and humble in a gain today.
