Supporting Against His Lord
وَيَعۡبُدُونَ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ مَا لَا يَنفَعُهُمۡ وَلَا يَضُرُّهُمۡۗ وَكَانَ ٱلۡكَافِرُ عَلَىٰ رَبِّهِۦ ظَهِيرࣰا ٥٥
Yet they worship instead of Allah that which can neither benefit them nor hurt them. The disbeliever was ever a partisan against his Lord.
Translation: Marmaduke Pickthall
Meaning
They worship besides Allah what neither benefits nor harms them; the disbeliever is ever a supporter against his Lord.
Insight
According to Elmalılı, the disbeliever not only disobeys the Messenger but works in hostility; the verse came down about Abu Jahl.
