Testing with a Gift
وَإِنِّي مُرۡسِلَةٌ إِلَيۡهِم بِهَدِيَّةࣲ فَنَاظِرَةُۢ بِمَ يَرۡجِعُ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلُونَ ٣٥
But lo! I am going to send a present unto them, and to see with what (answer) the messengers return.
Translation: Marmaduke Pickthall
Meaning
“I will send them a gift and see with what the envoys return.”

According to Elmalılı, this was to test whether they could be turned away with wealth.
