Throw Your Staff

And throw down thy staff! But when he saw it writhing as it were a demon, he turned to flee headlong; (but it was said unto him): O Moses! Fear not! the emissaries fear not in My presence.

Translation: Marmaduke Pickthall

Meaning

“Throw down your staff.” When he saw it writhing like a snake, he turned and fled.

Insight

According to Elmalılı, this teaches that in that station one should lean on nothing else; “jann” means a light, swift snake.

Reflect

In Allah’s presence, let go of other supports.
