Gentleness

It was by the mercy of Allah that thou wast lenient with them (O Muhammad), for if thou hadst been stern and fierce of heart they would have dispersed from round about thee. So pardon them and ask forgiveness for them and consult with them upon the conduct of affairs. And when thou art resolved, then put thy trust in Allah. Lo! Allah loveth those who put their trust (in Him).

Translation: Marmaduke Pickthall

Meaning

By Allah’s mercy the Prophet was gentle with people. Had he been harsh and hard-hearted, they would have scattered from around him. The verse counsels forgiving, consulting, and relying on Allah once a decision is made.

Insight

According to Elmalılı, consultation (mushawara) here is for general matters based on opinion, where no revelation has come. The root of ‘mushawara’ also carries the meaning ‘taking honey from the hive’: to consult is to gather the best view from everyone.

Reflect

Whose opinion are you forgetting to ask in a decision you have to make?
