Verify the News
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓاْ إِن جَآءَكُمۡ فَاسِقُۢ بِنَبَإࣲ فَتَبَيَّنُوٓاْ أَن تُصِيبُواْ قَوۡمَۢا بِجَهَٰلَةࣲ فَتُصۡبِحُواْ عَلَىٰ مَا فَعَلۡتُمۡ نَٰدِمِينَ ٦
O ye who believe! If an evil-liver bring you tidings, verify it, lest ye smite some folk in ignorance and afterward repent of what ye did.
Translation: Marmaduke Pickthall
Meaning
If a wrongdoer brings you news, verify it.

According to Elmalılı, this means not being carried away by news at once, but seeking clarity and investigating; for one who does not shun sin does not shun lying either. Ar-Razi says this surah guides believers to noble character.
