Those Ahead and Behind
وَلَقَدۡ عَلِمۡنَا ٱلۡمُسۡتَقۡدِمِينَ مِنكُمۡ وَلَقَدۡ عَلِمۡنَا ٱلۡمُسۡتَـٔۡخِرِينَ ٢٤
And verily We know the eager among you and verily We know the laggards.
Translation: Marmaduke Pickthall
Meaning
We know the preceding among you and the later ones.

According to Elmalılı, these are those ahead and behind in birth and death, or those foremost and lagging in faith and good deeds.
