Trial

And surely We shall try you with something of fear and hunger, and loss of wealth and lives and crops; but give glad tidings to the steadfast.

Translation: Marmaduke Pickthall

Meaning

Allah tests people with something of fear, hunger, and loss of wealth, lives and crops. Glad tidings are given to those who are patient.

Insight

Elmalılı draws attention to the word ‘something’ in the verse: hardships come little by little. He adds that these small trials prevent disasters from coming all at once and on everyone.

Reflect

How did a hardship in your past help you grow?
