Heaps of Wealth

يَقُولُ أَهۡلَكۡتُ مَالࣰا لُّبَدًا ۝٦

And he saith: I have destroyed vast wealth.

Translation: Marmaduke Pickthall

Meaning

He says: “I have squandered heaps of wealth.”

Insight

According to Elmalılı, he says this to boast before the believers, meaning wealth spent for show. It is called “squandering” because it was wasted rather than spent on real benefit.

Reflect

Ask about something you spent today: “Was it for show or for benefit?”
