Our Houses Are Exposed
And when a party of them said: O folk of Yathrib! There is no stand (possible) for you, therefor turn back. And certain of them (even) sought permission of the Prophet, saying: Our homes lie open (to the enemy). And they lay not open. They but wished to flee.
Translation: Marmaduke Pickthall
Meaning
They said: “Our houses are exposed”, while they were not; they wanted only to flee.
Insight
According to Elmalılı, Yathrib is the old name of Medina; they were inventing excuses to escape the battle.
Reflect
Don’t invent excuses to escape responsibility.
